Hugo Chavez

July 28, 1954, the day a president was born. He had all brothers and he was the second out of six surviving kids. His parents were both schoolteachers.

Military Academy

1971

1971, he entered a military academy in Caracas. He didn't want to be a soldier, he wanted to become a good baseball player. The academy had good baseball coaches.

Leaving the Academy

1977

1977, Hugo was ready to leave the army, but then he found out that his brother Adan was working with insurgent. Adan was working with them secretly.

Secret Movement

1982

1982, Chavez formed a secret formed the Bolivarian movement 200 to spread the insurgents. They wanted to take over a civilian military.

Attempted to Take Over Government

Feb 4, 1992

February 4, 1992, Hugo Chavez and a group of military officers led an attempt to take over the government. The rebellion quickly crashed, which was unfortunate for Chavez. Chavez was unable to complete the key part of the operation, but the others successfully captured the other army.

Took Office

1999

1999, Hugo took office, his approval rating reached 80% during his first year in office. He oversaw the drafting of the new constitution. It required election for every new elected official in the county.

Reelected

2000

2000, Hugo was reelected to a 6 year term. His power increased in the National Assembly. The pro-chavez was enough people to pass a law.

Anti-Chavez Marches

2002

2002, his approval percent had fallen 30%. Anti-Chavez marches had become more popular. Some members of the military turned against him.

PDVSA

2003

2003, strikes against Hugo had collapsed. Chavez took full control over the PDVSA. His approval ratings rebounded.

Death

March 5, 2013, Hugo died in Carasas. He died from cancer at the age of 58.
