Thomas Jefferson - Party Leader
Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801. He was a member of the Republican party. When he became president there were high tensions between the Republicans and the Federalists. Due to a law passed by Congress, the Republicans had gained power. When Jefferson became president, as his party leader, he weakened Republican power to help ease tensions between the Republicans and the Federalists. He also weakened their power in the federal judicary by using the power of impeachment -
James Madison - Commander in Chief
At the end of James Madison's first and second term as president, the war of !812 came about. Madison being Commander in Chief, was reluctant to go to war with Britain for a second time. Members of Congress had urged him to call America to arms, but he was reluctant. Finally in June, he appeared in front of Congress to issue a call to arms. Congress declared war on June 17, and the war of 1812 began. -
Abraham Lincoln - Chief Legislator
During the mid 1800s slavery was the main topic in government. There was good arguements for and against slavery. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US president, was against slavery. On Janurary 1st of 1863 he signed the emancipation proclamation which freed over 3 million slaves in tthe South. Chester Arthur - Chief Executive
During the Civil War, US General Fitz John Porter was blamed and imprisoned for the Union's defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run. It was not known until years later that he was forced into the badly planned attack by Major General John Pope. These events also lead to his dismissal from the armed forces. As Chief Executive, president Chester Arthur pardoned Fitz Porter and restored his place in the military. -
John F Kennedy - Economic Leader
When John F. Kennedy was elected for presidency in 1960, he promised he would get America's economy moving again. He proposed two tax cuts in 1963 that did just that. As the Economic Leader of the nation, Kennedy propsed to cut income taxes to 14-65 percent and corporate tax rate to 47 percent. Many members of Congress did not think it would work, but in 1963 the economy grew. -
Jimmy Carter - Chief Diplomat
When Jimmy Carter was elected president he said he would change the US foreign affairs. He said for to many years, America had been willing to accept flawed policies. As Chief Diplomat, in 1979, Carter and the leaders of of Egypt and Israel met and facilitated the Camp David Peace Accords. This helped ease the tension and hostility between the two countries. This also paved the way for the Middle East for finding peace. -
Bill Clinton - Chief Executive
In 2000, Bill Clinton, as Chief Executive, gave his final State of the Union Address. This is a speech telling America what the goals and accomplishments of the following and next year are. Clinton planned to pay off foreign debt and make America the safest country on Earth. He also wanted every child in the country to grow up with an education and will not be raised in poverty. Barack Obama - Head of State
Most of the country knows, president Obama is a big basketball fan. Every year as the Head of State, he selects his bracket for the NCAA mens basketball tournament. This has become a tradition for him over the past eight years. For the second time, Obama picks the Kansas Jayhawks to win the national championship.
