History of Geometry in Mathmatics

Ancient Babylonian

1600 BCE

Babylonian Geometry was devoted to measurement. They showed some knowledge on what we today call the Pythagorean Theorem. They also used formulas to find the area and volume of common shapes.

Thales

600 BCE

Thales is said to have been the first person to attempt to prove geometrical theorems. He is said to have proved that the sum of the angles in any triangle is equal to two right angles.

Pythagoras

500 BCE

Pythagoras created what we know today as the Pythagorean Theorem which is A squared plus B squared equals C squared.

Plato

400 BCE

PLato was a very well know Greek philosopher. He was the fuonder of the first Academy which brought higher learning to the Western World.

Euclid

300 BCE

Euclid was a Greek mathematician and became known as the

" Father/Founder of Geometry" He was known for the textbook he created called "Elements" This book consists of 465 theorems and proofs, which are all described in detail.

Archimedes

280 BCE

Archimedes was known for many impodiscoveries within the Geometry world. One of his most important accomplishments is that he proved that the volume of a shere is 2/3 of the volume as a circumscribed cylinder.

Pi

250 BCE

Pi is a symbol that means the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. This symbol was first used by the famous mathematician Archimedes around 250 BCE. This symbol represents a never ending number that starts with 3.14....... Pi is a symbol that is used by all within math.

Heron

Heron of Alexandera was famous in geometry and was known for his important work as an inventor/engineer. Heron helped design and invent many different machinesdurning his time period.

Rene Descartes

Rene Descarts was a French mathematician
who is known for bringing the world of algebra and geometry together. He solved gemoetry poblems using algebra formulas.
