He was born in Dijon, in the Cote-d'Or department of France, The Eiffel family was originally from Germany, and moved to Paris in the 18th Century. -

He enrolls at the Paris college of Sainte-Barbe for entrance to Polytechnique. He failed the exam and then goes to École Centrale where he studies Chemistry. -
