• He became a vegetarian in college and for the rest of his life

Gustav's hobbies
• His favorite hobby was hiking, even though he had bad health. He loved hiking in England, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. He also took a bicycle tour of Morocco. -

• He left the academy in 1898 and becomes a professional trombonist and vocal coach in the Carl Rosa Opera Company -

• His health prevents him from going to World War I, but kept him in Greece and Istanbul to teach under privelaged kids music.
