He was Born in Nice, France. This is where he grew up for most of his life -
1883 joins Guiseppe Mazzini's Young Italy
‘Young Italy’ movement, and was sentanced to death for being apart of the act to seize Genoa, but escaped to South America. He was more like an itailian patriot. -
Is sentenced to death in absentia in Genoa.
He was involved in an abortive Mazzinian insurrection in Piedmont. He was then sentenced to death in Absentia by a Genoese court, and then ran away where he couldnt be found to Marseilles. The exile sailed first to Tunisia eventually finding his way to Brazil, where he came upon Anna Maria Ribeiro da Silva, "Anita," a woman of Portuguese and Indian culture, who became his lover and then eventually his wife. -
Sails to Brazil
He then sailed to Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil. He came there from Marseille where he had met his lover just recently. He lives there as a working salior under a false name. -
Enters Service of the Republic.
As a privateer, he then goes into the service of the Republic of the Rio Grande do Sul, which is fighting to keep its independence from Brazil. On Rio della Plata he is attacked and was tried to be killed by Uruguayans. He is then seriously wounded and some how escapes to Argentina, where he stays a few months in prison in Galeguay. When he is realesed from jail, he remains staying in Montevideo -
Back to Rio Grande
Till 1841 he fights the Brazilians on sea and on land. In 1839 at Laguna he meets Anita his wife and his lover. In 1840 their son Domenico is born, he will always call him by the name Menotti. -
Returns to Montevideo
Till 1848 , he goes to Montevideo. He then fights for Uruguay, which has been attacked by Argentina, in support of the rebel Oribe. In 1842, he is given charge of a mission to the river Paranà, then he takes part in the defence of the country Montevideo, under siege, and then in 1845 he leads another mission to the River Uruguay; in February 1846 he resists higher forces in the Battle of San Antonio al Salto, an exploit which becomes famous, returning after the battle to defend the capital. -
Leaving Montevideo
He leaves from Montevideo for Italy, where he comes in June. The first war of independence is in occuring. Convinced that the Italians must be together in order to win against Austria, he offers to fight for Carlo Alberto. The Piedmont army rejects him, but he keeps his command from the provisional government of Milan. After the Salasco armistice, he fights as an irregular against the Austrians in Lombardy. -
He then Dies
He died June 2nd, 1882, he was 74 years old. He did alot in his long lifetime that people will remeber forever. He was an historic figure that changed the way people live everyday in modern day society.
