Ghandi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandor. This is near Bombay. -
Ghandi Married
Ghandi was born at the age of 13. This was in May of 1882. -
Defiling Custom
When Ghandi was 19 he defiled custom and went to study law at University College. This is in London. During this time he discovered the principle of nonviolence. -
Returning and Leaving Again
In 1891 he returned to India, but he quickly realized that he was of no use there, so he moved to South Africa in 1893. He was the first "colored" lawyer to be on the Supreme Court. -
Founder
In 1894 he founded the Natal Indian Congress. He did this to agitate for Indian rights. -
Returning Home Again
In World War 1 he organized an ambulance corps for the second time. After this he returned home in 1914. -
Salt Tax
In 1930 he began the protest of salt tax. During this he lead people on a 200 mile walk to the sea to collect salt. After this he was put in jail for the third time. -
Retirement
In 1934 Ghandi retired as head of his party. Even though he retired he still remained their actual leader. He began to have doubts that India would never receive its freedom while still being under the rule of the British Empire. -
Victory and Independence
Finally, Ghandi got his victory. In 1947 India won its independence. -
Ghandi's Death
On January 30, 1938 he was assassinated by a Hindu. Later in 1997 his ashes were spread in the Ganges River. This was nearly 50 years after he had died.
