He also talked about how last time he wrote her a letter he was under marching orders. The only time they could go to the river was at night because the Yankees had perfect view of them and could easily kill them. One day they had a battle all morning and all night. -

glovesIn this letter he tells His wife, about how he is doing well. She sent him a box with two pairs of gloves, one which he sold. He got a vest in the box, which he also sold, because he had bought one last Christmas. He also got a pair of sox, which he kept. He had a long hard march into Romney. They had a fight against 1,400 yankees, but they still succeeded. He said he might be able to come home for two months, if he resigns up for 2 more years. -

bunker hillIn this letter he tells his wife how he had to walk 100 and 50 miles from Staunton to Bunker Hill, from where he was last. There was no Yankees where they were then, and they had to go back to the Valley or go back to MaryLand. Because they couldn't get any Food or Supplys where they were then. Nothing had happened, because they've been in the camp for such a little time. They did'nt have any paper left hardly, so the wife's had to send it from home with there letter. -

camp AllenHe writes in this letter, that he is doing well, and that he had to rip a leaf off a book to write this letter. He had $150.00 dollars and wanted to send his wife $130.00 But he said if he couldn't send it, then he would try to bring it home himself. He also said everything was peaceful, but as he was writing the letter he heard cannons. -

camp baylorIn this letter, he wrote how he is doing good, and He is having spare time, while waiting to go on a long march. He had sent 4 letters and not recieved any answer, in his last letter, he sent $5.00 and wanted to know if she got it. He say's she is the only one he cares for, and he wants them to "meet again" if that's what's in Gods will. He got paid three weeks ago, and she once said she would feel rich if she ever had $100.00. He doesn't trust letters, so he wants it to be hand givin to her. -

camp winderIn this letter, he is doing well. He sent $67.00 and wants to send more but he does'nt know if she had recieved it yet. He doesn't know when he's going to be able to come home, but he thinks the chances are very small, of him being able to come home. He said he didn't have much to say, but that she needed to write him back. -

camp winder paxtons brigadeHis wife finnaly wrote back to him, he got the letter when he was on Picket, so he could'nt answer yesterday. He recieved two pairs of socks from her, and asked for her to send hard soap, and black and white thread. He had only recieved four letters from her, and she said she had only recieved four letters from him. But he had sent more then 4 letters. She had recieved all the other money he sent except $10.00. He will send more money when Henry, a man he knows, "visits". -

When he does get the chance to give it to her, he wants her to buy a cow with it to feed with. He said there having great health, that they havn't had any snow, it;s been very nice weather.They are under marching orders all the time. They were sposed to leave the camp they've been at, but they havn't left yet. They heard the yankee's are near. -

paxtons brigade civil wara boy and girl died, it did not say who they were. He sent $20.00 to her, from a man who visited. He recieved red peper and black and white thread, but he doesn't need soap anymore. Because there going marching and he wants to be as light as possible. He asked her to write to him more, again. He tells her to send his respect to everyone back home. -

camp winder civil warHe is doing well. They are about to march to Richmond. The days are getting ,onger, and the weather dryer. People around him are talking about fighting, but he doesn't think there will be as much fighting this summer, as last. There might be fighting here and there, but he said if they beat them, then there not going to Maryland. The Furloughs were suspended, and it's likely there won't be anymore granted till next Winter. -

camp winder civil warHe wants to send her more money next month. His pay was raised $4.00 per month, so now he gets paid $21.00 per month. They've been expecting to move camps for more then a week, but they've yet to do so. They sent away there extra bagages two weeks ago and only kept a blanket and coat with them. When they leave to march the officers will have to carry there knapsacks on there back like everyone else. He said he had no news of importance in this letter. -

letter civil warThis is a very short letter. It says that he's doing well, and hopes shes the same. He said he gives his respect and that he has nothing to talk about. He's in the battlefield while he writes this and hears cannons. He hopes they will beat them. This is the battle of Chancellorsville. -

battle of chancellorsvilleIn this battle about 650 soldiers were wounded, and Lee A.B Terry got wounded in his wrist. He said men fell on both sides of him, and if God wasn't with him then he thinks he would have fell to. In the battle he got alot of paper, and an oil cloth coat. They got in the rear of the Yankees and fought all day saturday and sunday. They got thirty peices of Artillary. They set up a camp near Fredericksburg. MAny people think there is going to be another battle soon. -
Camp near Fredericksburg
On april 29th they left there winter quarters, due to the enemy coming near.They slept 2 nights in a wheat field. Near the first of MAy, they learned the enemy was coming down Fredericksburg road. They met with some other divisions, and a few days later went to war, They went to battle that day then all saturday night.Sunday they were in battle.General Jackson died from newmony. The enemy fired 2 generals & a Colonel. He took a knapsack & got many good things/ clothes.They lost ~8,000 men. -
Camp near Hamilton station
fort hamiltonThere encamped behind Fredericksburg, but he thinks that they will be leaving soon, because he heard Longstreets orders were to have 3 days of food ready, so there able to march at any time. Mr.Pursinger arrived, and so he got him to take back to his wife, $20.00 and two neck comforts. -
Camp Paxton
camp paxtonThey got marching orders today, and he doesn't know when he will be able to write her again. They cooked 3 days worth of food, and there ready to march at any given time. Sometime there going to make an active campaign. The whole army believes that they will take another trip to Maryland before summer is over. He asks for a little bit of soap next time she writes. -
Camp Stephenson, Frederick County, Va
camp StephensonThey lost 40,000 men and Lieutenant General Ewell. They killed only about 7 or 8 thousand yankees. They arrived at vicinity of Winchester last Saturday. Sunday evening they got there artillery ready, and they could have taken them with a heavy loss, but there commander knew that in the middle of the night, the yankees would try to sneak out, he was right. They spiked there artillery and ran into them, they surrendered as prisoners of War. Only a few of us had died/hurt. One of best won battles.
