WHAT: Jacques Cartier discovered the mouth of St.Lawrence river. He also explored much of it's area. He also gave Canada and the Canadians their names. -
Rene-Robert Cavelier Siur de La Salle 1643-1687
WHO: La Salle was a French explorer.
WHEN: La Salle was born November 22 1643 and died March 19 1687. He started exploring in the year 1660.
WHERE: He was born in the city Rouen Normandy. He explored the Mississippi river.
WHY: La Salle explored down stream the Mississippi river to find a route to China.
WHAT: La Salle made a series of forts in Canada ,made many friendships with Native Americans and sailed down the Mississippi river. -
Louis Joliet (Jolliet) (b. 1645- d.1700)
Who: Louis Joliet was a French Canadian explorer.
What: He embarked on a trip with missionary Jacques Marquette along the Mississippi River, with Native American guidance that led to the Gulf of Mexico. He made expeditions to the Hudson Bay & Labrador Coast.
When: He was born in 1645 & died in 1700. He explored in 1673.
Where: He was born in Quebec City, Canada & died in Anticosti Island, Canada. He explored the origins of the Mississippi River.
Why: He thought he would find a passage to Asia. -
Jacques Marquette (b.1637- d. 1675)
Who: Jacques Marquette was a French missionary and explorer
What: He was famous for exploring and mapping the Mississippi River with the help of Louis Jolliet (see left)
When: b. June 1, 1637- d. May 18, 1675 he explored from May 17, 1673 until he died
Where: He was born and he explored for France, He explored in th Mississippi River and Green Bay.
Why: France sent him on missions and he found his love in exploring
