Morning of Leonard's 18th Birthday
Leonard gets ready to begin his plan. He eats breakfast while his P-38 WWII Nazi handgun sits on the table. He wraps presents in pink wrapping paper and will give them to those close to him before he leaves. -
Walt's House
Leonard goes to his neighbor, Walt's house to give him the the first present. His present is a hat in the style that Humphrey Bogart wore in the film Casablanca. Leonard lies and says the hat was actually worn by Bogart. -
The Train Station
Leonard goes to the train station in a suit. On these days he follows the saddest-looking adult he can find. He wants them to do something that will make them happy, instead of going to work. He does this to see if there is anything good about growing up and being an adult. -
AP English
Leonard goes to English class with Mrs. Giavotella. A football player knocks his hat off and the whole class sees that his hair is cut off. After class, Mrs. Giovotella talks to Leonard about his test on Hamlet. He refused to answer any of the multiple choice questions on the test and didn't answer the correct writing prompt. Leonard is upset that teachers want students to learn about people like Hamlet, but instead of doing great things, worry about college acceptance and grades. -
Baback
Leonard goes to the auditorium during lunch, where he usually listens to Baback pratice his violin. Instead of listening today, he gifts him a check for $100,000 made out to True Democacy in Iran. Baback thinks it's a joke and refuses to accept the check. -
Bronze Star
Leonard goes to Holocaust class with his teacher, Herr Silverman. The class discusses if the Germans were really evil of just responding to the social and political climate of that time. Leonard is annoyed by the people in his class who put themselve on a moral pedestal. After class, Leonard gifts Herr Silverman his grandfather's bronze star from World War II. -
The Concert
Leonard thinks about the gift he gave Asher Beal for his birthday about seven years earlier. He gifted him tickets to a Green Day concert, Asher's favorite band. -
Lauren
Leonard meets Lauren at the train station. Leonard compares her to Lauren Bacall, a prominent actress in Bogie films. Lauren hands Leonard a religious tract, but Leonard is more interested in her than in what the tract says. Leonard agrees to go to a service at her church, where her boyfriend also attends. -
Lauren's Gift
Leonard gives Lauren her gift, which is a silver cross on a chain. Leonard says that the gift is from God. Leonard kisses her and before leaving, asks her to pray for him. -
Asher Beal
Leonard heads to Asher Beal's house where he plans to shoot and kill him. He waits for Asher to go to his bedroom, where he spends time on the computer. Leonard wants to kill him, but can't bring himself to do it. Instead he takes a photo of him with his phone. -
The Bridge
Leonard goes to a bridge, where kids in his high school go to drink beer and have parties. He tries to kill himself, but can't bring himself to do it. After awhile, he calls Herr Silverman. -
On the Phone
On the phone, Herr Silverman talks to Leonard and convinces him to stay where he is. He convinces him not to pull the trigger. After talking to his roommate, Herr Silverman says he will get a taxi and get Leonard. -
The Tattoo
Herr Silverman finds Leonard under the bridge holding the handgun. He shows Leonard the tattoo on his wrist, which is a pink triangle. It's the same pink triangle the Nazis tattooed on homosexuals to lable them in concentration camps. Herr Silverman explains that he got the tattoo to show that it's okay to be different. -
The Apartment
Herr Silverman takes Leonard to his apartment in Philadelphia where he lives with his partner, Julius. Herr Silverman gives him back the bronze star, but it's covered with paper, painted, and laminated. The star is a peace sign. Herr Silverman calls Leonard's mom, but she doesn't answer. Leonard leaves in the morning before Herr Silverman wakes up. -
Banana Pancakes
Leonard goes home and sees Walt. After watching The African Queen with him. When he goes home, his mother comes back from New York City. Leonard wants her to make him banana pancakes, but she ends up getting busy with work, so he makes them himself. After he eats them, his mother is still talking on the phone, and he leaves his house.
