    John Locke is often known as the father of Classical Liberalism. Locke claimed that people are born free, a blank slate or Tabula Rasa. He claimed that the government had a limited responsibility to protect the individual rights and private property of citizens. He felt that people were rational and could make their own decisions. He also believed that when the government broke the social contract the people had the right of rebellion.

    Montesquieu publishe the Spirit of Laws in 1748. In this book he claimed that all humans are born equal but they lose this quality over time. He also developed the idea for the seperation of branches of government so that those in power cannot abuse the power that they hold.

    Adam Smith publishes An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations - often refered to as The Wealth of nations. He is sometimes refered to as the father of capitalism. He argued for more economic freedom for the individual. He felt that all individuals are quided by self interest to improve their own personal welfare. He also came up with the theory of the of the Invisible Hand.

    Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France. Burke challenged many of the ideas of Locke. He was the leading philosopher of classical conservatism. He felt that people had a moral responsibility to respect the traditions of the past. He also felt that not all people had the ability to make decisions concerning politics so it should be left in the hands of those who were capable.

    Karl Marx published the pamphlet called The Communist Manifesto in 1848. In it he described his idea that all history was an evolution and series of conflicts that would one day lead to an inevitable outcome of the proletariate forming a revolution and overthrowing the bourgeoisie. He felt that on day the people would work together and there would be no need for a government.

    Hitler publishes his book, Mein Kampf, which he wrote while in jail for being involved in the Beer Hall Putsch. In this book he outlines his fascist beliefs and his plan to enable germany to recover from the economic situation after WW1. He believed in a form of extreme nationalist socialism where the elite all benefited by the supression of others. He believed in severe class distinctions, and traditions. He promoted individualism as long as it was in support of the state.

    Mussolini published his philosophy of fascism in the book, Doctrine of Fascism. He connected individualism with the state. He believed in a form of totalitarianism where the individuals exist in accordance with the parameters set by the state. The goals of the state become the ideas that the individual is concerned with.
