  • Ernest Nagel Early Years

    Ernest was born in 1901 in November in Slovakia. He then came over to the states when he was only 10 years old. He was finally able to receive his citizenship in 1919 while he was also going higher in his education and he was able to graduate in 1923 with a bachelors of science from New York and in 1925 he received his masters in philosophy and then later went on to get his PhD in 1931. He received his degrees in New York and it's where he spent most of his life.

    Ernest Nagel

    While he was living in New York Ernest married Edith Alexandria Haggstrom and they had 2 sons together and one was a a professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the other son was professor of physics at the University of Chicago. During his life time even while raising a family he earned many honors and honorary doctorates from many different institutions. in 1934-35 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and from 1950-51.

    Work Life

    In 1954 he was elected to to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences while he was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1962. He was also elected in 1977 to the National Academy of Sciences. He was known for not only being an influence to students of philosophy but of many other things. During his time at the American Philosophical Society he wrote a book called The Structure of Science where he goes into quantum mechanics, status of reductive and inductive theories of science, etc.
  • Death

    Ernest Nagel became John Dewey professor of philosophy at Columbia University in 1955 and in 1967 he achieved the most amazing academic rank. He went from University Professor, and in 1970, became Professor Emeritus. They kept Ernest as a respected and special lecturer Columbia until 1973. He said in this position until his death which was caused by pneumonia in 1985.
