Joshua's Timeline

  • Joshua takes on the parental role

18-year-old Joshua lost his parents in the Philippine-American war, leaving him with the responsibility to care and provide for his three younger siblings. As Erikson states in his fifth stage (Identity vs Role Confusion), many teens Joshua's age struggle with their role in this world. Despite Joshua still feeling like a kid at heart, he is determined to be his siblings' parental figure and to keep what little of the family he has left.
  • Joshua wants to find love

23-year-old Joshua spends time with his best friend Antonio. He listens to Antonio discuss his Valentine's Day plans for his girlfriend Marie. As Erikson states in his sixth stage (Intimacy vs Isolation), major conflicts, around this stage in life, center on forming intimate, loving relationships with other people. As Joshua listens to Antonio, he can't help but feel isolated. and lonely because he had never been intimate with anyone due to his family obligations.
  • Joshua's final wishes for his siblings

75-year-old Joshua is laying in his bedroom, surrounded by his siblings. He knew his time was coming to an end and Joshua's final wish to his siblings is to never settle in life and to go find love. As Erikson states in his eighth stage (Ego Integrity vs Despair), we contemplate our accomplishments and develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life. Joshua has always felt despair as he never found love or lived the life he truly wanted for himself.
