Ted Turner launched CNN on June 1, 1980. CNN stands for Cable News Network. It was the first ever dedicated 24- hour news cable channel. It helped show big potential of cable television and he changed tv forever. -

On May 30, 1982 Spain joined NATO. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Spain joined NATO during the Cold War. This helped defeat the Soviet Union because it pushed them one step back from controlling Europe. -

On March 8, 1983, Reagan called the Soviet Uniopn an "Evil Empire." This all happend in his speech to the National Association of Evangelicals. Is first intent was not as harsh as this. He had made hand written changes calling them an "Evil Empire." His speech is now on display. -
Reagan announces "Star Wars"
On March 23, 1983, Reagan annouced his strategic defense initative called star wars. the SDI had space-based weapons to shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles known as ICBMs. It was the use of spacecraft and laser that would open up to future ideas. Because of all the lasers and spacecraft he called it "star wars." -
Korean Air Lines Flight 007 shot down
On September 1, 1983 Korean Air Lines Flight 007 with 269 people including U.S Congressman Larry McDonald, shot down by the Soviets. It supposedly crashed in the Sea of Japan South West of Sakhalin Island, but no one knows. The Soviet Union took control of the alleged crash site, not allowing U.S. or Japanese rescue teams to search the waters for any servivers. So no one really knows what happend to Flight 007. -
Konstantin Chernenko becomes General Secretary of the Soviet Commmunist Party.
On February 13, 1984 Konstantin Chernko was named the General Secretay of the Soviet Communist Party. The former secretary Yury Andropov suddenly became very ill. When he died Chernenko succeeded him and became secretay of the CPSU. This is how he came into office. -
Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of the Soviet Union
On March 11, 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader if th Soviet Union. Mikhail made many changes to the way the U.S.S.R. worked. He increased political freedom, economic reform, and an end to the Cold War. Hwas awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for all he did while being leader of the U.S.S.R.
