It took them three days to get there by foot and the first night he was in charge of the guard duty. After the first night evreyone was ready to go back to camp and some even wanted to go home.

    They finally got out of the woods after such a long time in this wild country. We pitched there tents a mile west of the concured city of Memphis. The next day news was spread that they had to be ready to march by three o'clock the next morning.

Richard was reading a letter at Arkansas post between two brothers fighting on different sides of the war.Richard states in his letter that after this war peace will have to come from the North.

In our regiment only 29 men have died and 14 wounded but everyone else is a little shooken up. Richard is tired and is going to go home for a month to see his family.

In the battle of Atlanta a lot of the Confederate troops were drunk because they were depressed so, the battle had a lot of deaths on both sides. Richard starts to feel sad after seeing the 100 dead Confederate troops right in front of there camp.

He explained that he was a little nervous because it would be easy for you to get captured by the Rebels and then sent to prision. He even seemed a little scared to be put in charge of the foraging party.

They have been foraging for food in the forest and found many cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, and different kinds of vegtables.

He is thankful that his brigade has remained in camp and he found out that fort McAllister has been captured. I think that Richard can't wait until they get to rest again and that sometimes he doesn't seem like he wants to be there.

It is like destroying part of yourself and having to start all over. At the end of the war Lieutenant Richard did more watching in battles than fighting.

The badges were given out by Commander Logan and had a picture of a cartridge box on it. I think that Richard would have liked to have been awarded a badge but was glad that other people got them.

Everyone needs new uniforms but clothing and shoes are supposed to arrive in a day or two. Richard adds that all he and his men want to see is the end of the war.
