  • Scott vs. Sanford Court Case

Dred Scott was a former slave who had been sent to a state where slavery was illegal. While there he got a job, had a family, and made a good life for himself. Later in life he returned to his owner to attempt to buy back his freedom, but was denied the right to buy back his freedom. He sued, saying that he was a free man but the court ruled that he was property and that slaves were not, and would never be, citizens, as well as saying that they were property.
