    Christopher L. Sholes was born near Mooresburg, Pennsylvania, to a farming family.

    When Sholes was about 18, he moved to the newly created Wisconsin Territory and worked at a family newspaper company in Green Bay. He then went to go work at a newspaper company in Madison called the Wisconsin Enquirer.

    After accepting a post as editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel, Sholes was appointed as the Collector of Port in that city, and quit his editing job. His appointment was called by President Abraham Lincoln.

    Although we may not realize it, Sholes' invention is present in numerous ways around us. For example, Sholes' "QWERTY" format is present on most keyboards and phones.

    About four years after Sholes was granted his first patent, he and his partners were granted an additional patent. This time, it was for the creation of an actual typewriter!

    Developing the Typewriter

    Between the time of his second patent and when he actually sold the rights, Sholes dedicated much of his life to creating prototypes and refining the idea.

    A few years after Sholes received the patent, he went on to sell it to the Remington Arms Company, which paid him $12,000 just for the patent rights. The company was well-equipped with the machinery to create the typewriters, and they were known as Remington Type-machines.
