The Challenger Expedition
From December 1872 to May 1876 the Challenger Expedition was discovered, it covered over 70,000 miles. During the explore, over 4500 new species and hundreds of sounding, trawls, dredgings, and temperature of marine life were discorved and recored. The result was described by an great oceanographer of the day as "the greatest advance in the knowledge of our planet since the celebrated discoveries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. -

After all he accomplished he published a two volume Voyage of the Challenger in the Atlantic in 1877, but the work involved n the publication of the full 50 volumes of research findings of the expedition was too much for him,he was honored at LL.D Trinity College and he died in West Lothian on MArch 10th 1882 at the age of 52.
