Staplehurst railway shock
On June 9, 1865, while returning from France to see Ellen Ternan, Dickens suffered an accident, the famous Staplehurst railway collision, in which the first seven carriages of the train fell from a bridge that was being repaired. The only first-class car that did not fall was the one where Dickens was. -

He died when he was 58 years old.
