    His parents were both Mexican, struggled to eke out of a living by raising chickens and vegetables. Sadly his family went broke, and to survive they had to become migrant workers.

    Even though they worked hard and long they still didn't earn enough money. Cesar's family had to live in a labor camp , sharing one bathroom with 50 other families.

    At age 21 Cesar decided to get married to a woman named Helen. She was always very supportive of Cesar's choices.

    Cesar found his first steady job becoming a member of a Community Service Organization. The organization was there to protect civil rights for Mexican Americans. Fighting discrimination that Mexican Americans face everyday .

    Cesar left his steady job when he realized, that migrant workers were being taken advantage. He traveled 15,000 miles to gather people to stand up for the workers. All the workers had to join together and form a union.

    Instead of using violence to fight back. They traveled to other states convincing them to stop buying the grapes, in support of the migrant workers.
  • Fast

    Cesar was beginning to worry that the union has forgotten their real reason. To stop the talk of violence he went on a fast for 25 days that permanently damaged his health. People would go and visit him. When he began to eat again the union was more united then before.

    The grape growers wouldn't give in. At this point it has already been two years since they've begun the strike. The migrant workers were starting to talk of violence since nothing was happening. Two years without a job was effecting their food intake
  • Gave in

    The grape growers finally gave in and accepted to sign the contract. The contract gave migrant workers equal rights and a higher wage.
  • Died

    Sadly Cesar Chavez died in his sleep. He is still remembered to this day and seen as a hero. There are streets, schools, building etc named after him. His strength and movement will always be remembered.
