Holden starts his story
He sits at Thomsen Hill, looking down at the football game and the school he attends called Pencey Prep. He has no interest in football, and he also talks about how he was on the fencing team and how he left the equipment on a subway in New York. -
He goes to see Mr. Spencer
He goes Mr. Spencer's house, his old history teacher and he goes there to say goodbye to him before he leaves. -
He goes back to Pencey Prep
He goes back to his dorm where he introduces the reader to Stradlater and Ackley. Holden haas skeptical feelings about both, and he describes them through his point of view. Further on, Holden was asked by Stradlater to write a composition for him, and he ends up writing about his brother, which made Stradlater very unhappy. They get in a little fight, with Holden getting knocked out and not remembering what happened. -
Holden leaves Pencey Prep
Holden leaves the school to go to New York city where his parents live. He procrastinates while he is there, though. -
Holden is off to NYC
He gets on a train and meets a lady who he talks to. He doesn't tell her his real name and he lies about having a brain tumor. -
He gets to NYC
At the station he arrives in, he feels like calling up someone, but he can't think of anyone to call. He gets a cab to his hotel and when he arrives he experiences some weird things that happened when he looked out his window. -
He tries to get a cocktail
He goes down to the Lavender room to get a cocktail while the waiter refuses to give him one. He then meets 3 ladies that are from Washington. He describes as unintelligent, but very good dancers. -
He goes to Ernie's Nightclub
When he is there all he does is listen to the conversations around him, which made him depressed because of all the phonies that were surrounding him. He leaves the night club to go back to the hotel. -
He is offered a prostitute
When he is back at the hotel, a guy in an elevator offers him to buy a prostitute. Holden agrees to the offer, and the guy sends up a prostitute to his room. When she arrives, Holden describes her as very young and depressing. He eventually says that he doesn't want to have sex, he just wants to talk to her. She then leaves, and comes back with the guy he met in the elevator. The guy beats him up for not giving him the money, and Holden pretends that he was just shot in the stomach. -
Holden makes a date
He makes a date with his old friend Sally Hayes later that afternoon and goes to a sandwhich shop while he waits. He meets two nuns there and donates ten dollars to them. -
Holden goes to the pond
Drunk and confused, Holden stumbles to the pond to see if the ducks are still there. He breaks the record he bought, and his hair starts to freeze because he wet it earlier. -
Holden goes to see Phoebe
He goes to the apartment of his parents, and goes into her room. Phoebe is happy to see him and they talk for awhile. He tries to explain to her how he failed out of Pencey Prep and she refuses to believe him. Later on he talks about how he wants to be the catcher in the rye, where he catches the children taht come close to the cliff. Holden's parents come in, and he gets out of the apartment unnoticed. -
He goes to Mr. Antolinis
He goes to his old english teachers house to stay for the night. He sleeps there and wakes up to his teacher patting his head. -
Holden goes to the museum
He writes Phoebe a note to meet him there so he can see her. Phoebe hears about Holden wanting to move, and she wants to come with him. Holden refuses, and she gets angry. At the end, Holden convinces her to ride the carousel as he sat on a parking bench where he was as happy as ever. -
Holden concludes his story
His story is finished, and he is staying at a rest home. He says that he is going to attend school the coming fall. He said that talking about the story made him miss all the people he met -
Holden meets Sally
Sally arives late, but he forgives her because she looks good. They go to the play that Holden ends up not liking because he thinks that they are too full of themselves. After that, they both go to a skating rink where Sally argues with him about his dreams and Holden ends up calling her a "Royal pain in the ass." -
Holden calls up an old friend
Holden calls up a guy he knew named Luce, and he wants to meet him so he can talk about sex. He remembers him ass talking about sex to little children. When Luce arrives, Holden starts to talk about it. Luce becomes annoyed, and eventually leaves because he would rather not talk about it.
