  • Chapter 1 and 2

    Chapter 1 and 2
    Themes: The story opens with him alone on the hill by the football stadium, this shows isolation. Then he goes and talks to Mr. Spencer and he gets frustrated because he keeps calling him son, this shos adolescdnce in a way like he doesn't want to be considered a kid anymore.
    Symbols: While Holden is talking to Mr.Spencer, he gets distracted while thinking about the ducks in Central Park. Then he lies about going to get his gym eqiuptment so that he can leave Mr.Spencers house.
  • Chapter 3 and 4

    Chapter 3 and 4
    Themes:When Holden gets back to his dorm room, he sits alone reading his book until Ackley comes. Then Stradlater comes in and talks about his date with Jane Gallegher which reminds Holden of when he was younger. Then Stradleter leaves, Holden is alone again and he thinks about Jane.
    Symbols:In the beginning of the chapter, Holden tells us that he is a terrific liar and that he will lie about the smallest things.
  • Chapter 7 and 8

    Chapter 7 and 8
    Themes:After Holden and Stradlater get into a fight, he goes into Ackley's room to sleep because his roommate Ely is gone. However Ackley doesn't want Holden to sleep in there. While this is all going on, Holden tells us that he feels really alone and depressed.
    Symbols: In chapter 8, Holden runs into a woman who is the mother of a boy he knew, basiclly his whole conversation with her was a lie. He tells her that his name is Rudolf Schmidt and that he has a brain tumor.
  • Chapter 5 and 6

    Chapter 5 and 6
    Themes: After Holden goes into town with Ackley and Mal, he goes back to his room and writes Stradlaters homework. He writes about his little brother who died the previous year. I think this makes him feel a little lonely. When Stradlater comes back they get into pretty big fight which is the main conflict in this chapter.
    Symbols:Holden kind of gets off track when he starts talking about his dead brother and when he starts thinkiing about Ed Banky's car.
  • Chapter 9 and 10

    Themes: Once Holden gets off the bus, he talks about calling Phoebe and about just calling anybody. I think this is because he doesn't want to be alone anymore. When he gets to his hotel the first thing he does is go to the club and he tries to get a drink but the waiter knew he wasn't old enough to drink. This shows that he is still an adolescent.
    Symbols: Holden lies about his age when he goes to get a drink. In the beginning of chapter 9, he gets distracted thinking about Phoebe.
  • Chapter 11 and 12

    Themes: Holden thinks a lot about Jane Gallegher in this chapter. He tells us about their background. Then Holden talks about how loneley he is again "It makes you feel so lonesome and depressed. I kept wishing I could go home and shoot the bull with Phobe for a while." pg 81. This also can show his adolesence because he wants to go home.
    Symbols: Holden gets distracted when he is in the taxi and he asks the taxi driver where they go in the winter. Then he lies to his brothers ex-girlfriend.
  • Chapter 13 and 14

    Themes: Holden gets a prostitute but when she gets there all they do is talk "Don't you feel like talking for a while?" pg 95.This shows his adolesence and it shows that he doesn't want to be isolated, he wants to talk. However, he still says that he is depressed and sad. After she leaves he is all alone again " Boy, I felt misirable." pg 98.
    Symbols: Holden lies to Sunny, the prostitute multiple times. "I just kept on lying my head off." pg 97
  • Chapter 15 and 16

    Themes: Holden decides to call up a girl that he went around with named Sally Hayes. They make a date for later that day but he really didn't want to. He walked around town for a while, he was feeling low till he saw a kid playing in the street singing "If a body catch a body coming through the rye" pg 115. He talks a lot about children in the rest of the chapter which shows his want for adolesence.
    Symbols:Holden walks around town thinking about the people he sees and about Phoebe.
  • Chapter 17 and 18

    Themes: Holden goes on a date with Sally but it ends bad when they get in an argument and he calls her a "Royal pain in the ass." pg 133. After Holden leaves Sally at the skating rink, he tried to call Jane but no one picked up so he calls Carl Luce and they agree to meet at the Wicker Bar. While he waits he remembers his family.
    Symbols: Holden gets distracted when he is talking to Sally and he gets this crazy idea for them to run away to Vermont or Massachusettes.
    Conflict: Fight with Sally
  • Chapter 19 and 20

    Themes: Holden talks to Carl Luce for a while but eventually he leaves even though Holden doesn't waant him to "Please. I'm lonesome as hell. No kidding." After he leaves Holden gets drunk and calls Sally to let her no that he was going tocome over and trim her tree on Christmas eve. Then he hangs up and regrets calling her. In the end he decides to finally go home.
    Symbols: Holden goes to Central park and gets lost thinking about memories and then he starts thinking about getting pneumonia.
  • Chapter 21 and 22

    Themes:Holden gets home and starts thinking about the differences in children and adults. He reads Phoebe's notebook and talks about how he loves kids and how they crack him up. Then he goes and talks to Phoebe about what a catcher in the rye is and about how he wants to be the catcher in the rye.
  • Chapters 25 and 26

    Chapters 25 and 26
    Themes:Holden goes to Grand central and sleeps for a while, then he gets breally depressed and kind of starts to go crazy. He has this feeling when he is crossing the streets that he will never get to the other side so he starts imagining asking his brother Allie to help him. Then he meets up with Phoebe and he almost starts crying again because he is about to leave her.
    Symbols: Holden lies to Mr. Antolini about coming back to his house and he lies to the lady at Phobe's school.
  • Chapters 23 and 24

    Themes: Holden talks to Phoebe at home for a while about everything that he has been doing and what he is going to do. When she gives him her Christmas money so that he can go and take care of himself for a few days, he starts to cry. Then he leaves and goes and stays with his favorite teacher for a while. His teacher talks to him about how dangerous the path that he is heading down is and what he needs to do to get better.
    Symbols: Holden doesn't really lie because he's around Phoebe.
