    Hempel was born near Berlin in 1905. Hempel was known to his friends as Peter.
  • Education

    Education
    Hempel studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the Universities of Göttingen and Heidelberg. Hempel transferred to the University of Berlin in 1925.

    University of Vienna
    Hempel was convinced to attend the University of Vienna for the fall semester in 1929. He studied with Carnap, Moritz Schlick, and Frederick Waismann; who would later become known as "The Vienna Circle.

    Hempel traveled to the United states not once, but twice and attended 2 universities. In 1937 to 1938 Hempel visited and studied at the University of Chicago.

    Visiting the United States (New York)

    During Hempel's second visit to the United States he attended City College of New York where he held his first academic position in 1939 to 1940. Carl Hempel eventually became a naturalized US citizen.

    In 1942 Hempel was first published in his writings of, "The Function of General Laws in History". In this he discussed the differences in scientific theory and scientific law.
  • A Very Productive Year!

    A Very Productive Year!
    In 1945, Hempel was published with three different articles/books. He wrote, "Studies in the Logic of Confirmation", "Geometry and Empirical Science", and "The Nature of Mathematical Truth". The three books discuss how we know the science of mathematics as true or false and how to confirm that discovery. In this same year Hempel also transferred from City College to Yale.

    During Hempel's time at Yale he was published an extraordinary four times with an inclusion to the International Encyclopedia of Unified science. This shows Hempel was a major leader, and scholar when it came to modern Scientific Philosophy.

    In 1955 Hempel moved Universities once again when he went to Princeton. Hempel's research program flourished at Princeton and began to take notice of the times professional philosophers.

    Tenured and Respected

    During Hempel's long career at Princeton he was published numerous times and had gained the trust and respect of the scientific community. One, "Aspects of Scientific Explanation (1965)" became a bible of sorts to scholars and philosophers alike. In this time period he was published an incredible 10 times!
  • Forced Retirement

    Forced Retirement
    Hempel was retired by Princeton due to mandatory policy. With this he moved to yet another institution at the University of Pittsburgh. His research did not slow down or suffer as he continued to be published and gain respect.
  • Death Still Continued Hempel's Research

    Death Still Continued Hempel's Research
    After Hempel's passing in 1997 more documents were discovered that further supported his work and research. These discovered documents directly supported multiple articles and books he published ranging from his early work in 1969 to contributing to all the way up to his most modern research.
