    Vikings Land in Newfoundland

    Vikings Land in Newfoundland
Leif Erikson and his Norwegian viking crew attempted the first settlement in mainland North America. They landed in Northern Newfoundland around the year 1000 in at what is now called "L'Anse aux Meadows". The Vikings called this land "Vinland". They were forced to leave this settlement due to numerous Indian raids. In 1960, Norwegian explorer Helge Instad found the remains of this settlement to confirm that the Norsemen had landed in North America nearly 500 years prior to Columbus and Cabot.

    Vikings- Bitterli's Contact Continuum

I would consider that the Vikings landing in Newfoundland would be classified as a collision as they were forced to leave the area aftver numerous Indian raids. The Natives were upset that they were attempting to settle and take over their land.

I would classify this event as a collision and also as a prime example of ethnocentrism as Gaspar de Corte-Real and his Portuguese crew barged into Native land and considered themselves to be of a higher class than the Natives. It was here that they captured 57 Beothuk Natives and sold them as slaves back in Europe
