The book takes place in 1945 where there is still racism in the south, which is also where he lives. -
Richard burns the curtains
In the begininng of the book, Richard sets the curtains on fire despite his ltlle brother warning him not to. -
Spanking
As a result of Richard burning the drapes, his mother almost beats him to death and the doctor orders him to stay in the bed because his life depended on it. -
Go to the store
Richards mother ordered him to go to the store to buy dinner. Richard cried no because the boys will jump him again but his mom said "Go now! If you come back into this house without groceries, I'll whip you!" (page 18) So Richard picked up a big stick and fought the kids off. -
Richard visits his father
Richard's mother takes him to visit his dad so he can ask for money so they can move to Arkansas with his aunt. Richard's father laughs hysterically and offers him a nickel. Richard tells his father "I'll take that poker and hit you!' and tells his fathers girlfriend "You ought to be dead'. Richard's mother tells his father "you ought to be ashamed, giving your son a nickel when he's hungry. If theres a God, He'll pay you back" and they leave. -
Kicked Out
Richard, his mother and his aunt Maggie got kicked out of their apartment by the landlady because Richard was scaring away her customers. The landlady, Richard's mother and Aunt Maggie got into a big quarrel before they left. They moved into aframe house down the street later that night -
Uncle Tom Kills
Uncle Tom robbed a white woman then hit her and knocked her unconscious. He didnt want the KKK to find her like that then come after him and kill him so he burned the house down with her in it. He came back to tell the family and they all started to pack frantically. Richard woke up and thought that his mother was ditching him so he began to cry. -
The War Is Over
When Richard returned to school, the students looked out the window and saw a plane flying. Their teacher said "Everyone, pack your things and go home!' "Why, whats happened?" the students replied. "The war is over", the teacher said. As the students left the building, the streets filled with white people singing, laughing, and cheering. -
Richard's Mother
One morning RIchard woke up to his brother yelling his name. he said "Richard, you better come see Mama. She's very sick" They both sprinted into her room calling her name bur recieved no reply. She just laid there with her eyes open and her moth gaped, staring at the ceiling. Richard ran to neighbors to get help. Some said she had a stroke and some said she it was paralysis. -
Straw Katy
On the first day of school, two boys ran up to Richard knocking his straw hat off his head. They laughed and called him "Straw Katy". Soon enough, other students joined in, changting "straw Katy while laughing and pointing. Then one boy picked up a rock and placed it on his shoulder. Then he said "knock it off, I dare you" Richard hesitated at first, then knock it off and grabbed the boy by the legs and dumped him. The boyys brother came running over, crying "Dont you hit my brother". -
Richard & Aunt Addie's Quarrel
Richards Mother , Grandmother & Aunt Addie were arguing on the front porch. Richard forgot that he had no right to speak while grownups were talking so when he did, his Grandmother tried to backhand him in the mouth, but he got used to her. He ducked & she fell down the stairs and Aunt addie thought he did something so she chased him into the kitchen & Richard grabbed the knife and said if you hit me ill cut you.
