Born
Richard Pierpoint was born in 1744 in Bondu, Senegambia, West Africa. He was most likely a Fulani, the dominent tribe of Bondu State. The image that I selected is one that shows the place that Pawpine was born on a map. -
Caught
At the age of 16 or 17 he was captured and branded by the Royal African Company. He along with other slaves were brought to America along the Middle Passage which took 2 months. In America he was bought by Pierpoint and was named Richard. Then he disappeared for twenty years. This is a picture of African slaves. -
The American Revolutionary War
The war had been already been going on for a year when Pierpoint enlisted to fight in Niagara. He joined the Butlers Ranger's and he became know as Pawpine or Captain Dick. This is a picture of the American Revolutionary War with the British on the left side and the Americans on the right. -
Veteran
A year after the war had Pawpine left the army. He was 36 at the time and disappeared again for 4 years. The picture that I'm using is one of black slaves who fought in the war and became free. -
Land
During those four years of absence Pawpine had most likely worked as a labouror. In 1788 he was granted a 200 acre parcel of land that he would have to clear and build his house on. That land was on Twelve Mile Creek. This is a black and white picture of Twelve Mile Creek which is near St. Catherines. -
Property
After working on the land for 3 years the Lots 13 and 14 and Concession 6 became his property. For some reason later on he sold them. This is another picture of Twelve Mile Creek except in colour. -
Petitioned
In 1794 Pawpine and a number of other free Africans petitioned Governer John G. Simcoe to allow them a Tract of County to settle on so that they could help other Africans.The Governor refused. The picture that I'm using is a picture of a petition. -
Removed
In 1806 Governor Peter Hunter removed Pawpines name from the list of United Empire Loyalists. This is a picture of the symbol of the United Empire Loyalists. -
War of 1812
After bieng removed from the list of United Empire Loyalists then he disappeared for 6 years. Then in 1812 America attacked the British and Pawpine wrote to the authorities offering to "raise a Corps of Men of Colour on the Niagara Frontier but he was refused. Instead he worked under a British Captain named Runchey. The piscture that I am using is a picture of the American flag and the British flag -
War has Ended
During the war Pawpine was at the Siege of Fort George, the Battles of Lundy's Lane and of Queenston Hieghts. Pawpines name is one the papers that officially disbanded "Coloured Corps" in 1815/ -
Going Back
When Pawpine was 77 years old he petitioned Lieutenant Governor Maitland on July, 21, 1821 for a ticket to go back to his Native country. Instead he was given another plot of land with the same conditions as before, to clear the land and build a house on it. The picture I'm using is a picture of West Africa. -
Cleared
It took Pawpine four years to clear the land at the age of 81. His cabin was built on the bank of the Grand River. This is a picture of the Grand River. -
Death
In 1836 more than 90 years old Pawpine died. The picture is one of a coffin.
