  • Massacre

    Massacre
    InfoThe group Jane was travelling with was raided by the patrollers. They all were killed except Ned and Jane, because they hid in the bushes. This is where Ned and Jane started to tavel together and became closer.
    "I could hear them hitting against the bushes and talking to each other. Then when they spotted somebody, a bunch of them would surround the person and beat him till they had knocked him unconcious or killed him." Page 31
  • Meeting Mr. Job

    Meeting Mr. Job
    Mr. Job took in Jane and Ned while they were travelling and gave them food and shelter for a night. Then he brought them to Mr. Bone's plantation.
    "Now, all a sudden I remembered I hadn't told Job thank you. Now, I wanted to run and catch that wagon and tell him how much I appreciated what he had done for us." Page 67

    This is the first plantation Jane goes to after freedom was declared. She spent many years here.
    "Bone was still looking at the paper, but I knowed he wasn't reading it, because I was looking up at his eyes and I could see they wasn't moving." Page 69

    Ned leaves because he joined a committee dedicated to observe the treatment of former slaves. He's forced to leave because the KKK came and hurt and threatened Miss Jane.
    "I didn't want him to go-God knows I didn't want him to go-but I knowed he had to leave one day, so why not now." Page 83
  • Joe Pittman Dies

    Joe Pittman Dies
    Joe dies trying to break the horse Jane sets free. This is the horse she kept seeing Joe die on. Jane lost her love of her life that day.
    "When Joe Pittman was killed a part of me went with him to his grave. No man would ever take his place, and that's why I carry his name to this day."
  • Ned Dies

    Ned Dies
    Albert Cluveau kills Ned. He tried to get Ned to stop and to get on his knees but he kept running at Cluveau. Cluveau shot Ned two times before he died.
    "Even the rain couldn't wash the blood away. For years and years, even after they had graveled the road, you could still see little black spots where the blood had dripped." Page 125
  • Albert Cluveau Dies

    Albert Cluveau Dies
    On his deathbed, Cluveau was screaming in agony. He was making fits over what Miss Jane told him, the Chariot of Hell. He kept seeing the chariot until he passed.
    "I had always thought I wanted to hear Cluveau scream. I had told myself that ever since he killed Ned." Pages 133-134

    Jane moves to Samson
    Jane already knew Aunt Hattie Jordan from Samson, and she didn't have any reason to live by the lake anymore, so she decided to move to Samson.
    "I borrowed a wagon from off the river and moved here by myself. It took me two trips, but I did it all by myself." Page 136

    FLOOD
    This is when Jane thought the elements were getting back at the people for trying to contain them. It destroyed and ripped up everything.
    "The water covered the swamps and the fields here at Samson, but it never got in the quarters. Because Robert Samson had the men build a dike 'long the railroad tracks from one end of Samson to the other." Page 156
  • Jimmy, "The One" is born

    Jimmy, "The One" is born
    Jimmy was supposively "The One". All of the people thought he was because he could say the alphabet when he was 6, he could read and write, and he would say what people wanted him to say, unlike the boy with the dog..
    "Lena was the first one to ask him if he was the ONe, then we all started wondering if he was the One. That was long long before he had any idea what we wanted out of him." Page 200
  • Jimmy Dies

    Jimmy Dies
    Jimmy, who was supposivley "The One", went on and fought for equality. This took his life away. Before he was about to do another protest, he was shot and killed at 8 in the morning.
    "Just a little piece of him is dead. The rest of him is waiting for us in Bayonne. And I will go with Alex." Page 234
