  • Birth

    Auguste Comte was born in Montpellier, France, to Louis Comte and Rosalie Boyer, both very devout Roman Catholics [2].
  • Paris

    In 1814, at the age of 16, Auguste was admitted to École Polytechnique, a school founded to train military engineers that eventually changed to a school for advanced sciences [2]. Just two years later, the school closed and Auguste took up permanent residency in Paris. This is when Comte began reading anything he could get his hands on related to philosophy, history, and several French political figures of the time [2].
  • Positivism

    In 1826, after a decade of reading and teaching, Comte developed and started teaching material he had developed known as positivism [1]. In only the second part of this three part series, Comte experienced a nervous breakdown, thus resulting in his resignation.   • Father of Sociology

    In 1845, Comte was involved in a romantic relationship with Clotilde de Vaux, that was profound and an emotional experience. After her death just one year later, Comte devoted his life to the development of his othe major work, the four volume "System of Positive Polity." This work outlined the study of society, or sociology, as we know it today [2].
  • Death

    Auguste Comte passed away in Paris on September 5, 1857, of stomach cancer [1]. Although he was often recalled as self-centered and egocentric, he devoted his life to the study and betterment of society.
