Ashoka Maurya
The high point of the Mauryan empire came during the reign of Chandragupta's granson, Ashoka. His major undertaking as emperor was in 260 B.C.E., when he conquered Kalinga and brought it under Mauryan control. Ashoka ruled the subcontinent of Maurya through a tightly organized bureaucracy, and encouraged the expansion of agriculture. He died in 232 B.C.E., and decline set in almost immediately.
