All Quiet on the Western Front

  • Battle of Verdum

    The battle last all the way till November but in the end nobody really wins. So it was pretty much another pointless war causing many to lose their lives and loved ones. Under one million people died. -Here my thoughts stop and will not go any farther. All that meets me, all that floods over me are but feelings – greed of life, love of home, yearning of the blood, intoxication of deliverance. But no aims.
  • Battle of Jutland starts

    Last all the way until June 1st. It was a naval battle between the British and Germany. Britian recived alot of losses and damage but Germany retreaded. -That evening's work made us more or less content to leave next morning. And an old buffer was pleased to describe us as "young heroes."
  • Paul Inlist

    Paul volunteered to be a soldier after he was encouraged to join because he heard the schoolteachers talking about getting people to join. -There were thousands of Kantoreks, all of whom were convinced that there was only one way of doing well, and that way theirs. And that is just why they let us down so badly.
  • The Front Line

    Paul and his other friends had to relieve the front line for a few days but on the last day the English had caused them to suffer. Starting with 150 men and ending with only 80 strong men. -It is fairly quiet on our sector, so the quartermaster who remained in the rear had requisitioned the usual quality of."
  • The Battle of Somme

    The battle lasted both day and night non stop all the way until November. On the first day of the battle 60,000 people died. -I look at the portraits once more; they are clearly not rich people. I might send them money anonymously if I earn anything later on. I seize upon that, it is at least something to hold onto. This dead man is bound up with my life, therefore I must do everything, promise everything in order to save myself.
  • Payback

    Himmelstoss accosts the group with orders. so they mugh him outside of a pub. -Iron Youth. Youth! We are none of us more than twenty years old. But young? Youth? That is long ago. We are old folk.
  • Kemmerich's death

    Paul watches Kemmerich die with hospital orderlies and doctors not really caring about enlisted men. Paul was then told to give Muller Kermmericks boots not out of greed but to help his chances for survival.Paul tries to comfort Kemmerich but he cries all the way into his death. -We want to live at any price; so we cannot burden ourselves with feelings which, though they might be ornamented enough in peace time, would be out of place here.
  • A Soldier in Need

    Paul and the others take shelter in a graveyard and throw bodies out of coffins and take their places to hide in them.They meet wounded soldiers along the way and help bandage where they can. knowing that he will suffer much before he dies.
    • "Naturally it's worse here. Naturally. The best for our soldiers every time, that goes without saying."
  • Training

    Training
    Paul and his friends have all been in training for the past 4 months. Himmelstoff is their platoon corporal and none of his friends like him because they all think that he is a waste of their time and very useless. -"It's queer, when one thinks about it," goes on Kropp, "we are here to protect our fatherland. And the French are over there to protect their fatherland. Now who's in the right?"
  • Kemmerichs condition

    Paul visits Kemmerich in the hospital as much as he can. His leg was amputated, but Paul and the others can't bring themselves to tell him the pain that his foot is phantom.
  • Bombs

    There are bombs going off every where and one of they lands close to where they are.
    • "Mighty fine fire-works if they weren't so dangerous"
  • Kemmerick Dies

    Kemmerick was injured and had to get his leg amputated. Paul stay and visit him any chance he got. He then realizes that he doesnt have a use for his boots without his foot so he told paul to give them to Mueller. -He turns away. After a pause he says slowly: "I wanted to become a head-forester once."

    Paul gets to return home for 17 days but he is struggling with himself on weather or not he should tell everybody including his family how bad the war really is for soldiers he doesnt want them to worry and stress over him too much. -I become faint, all at once I cannot do any more. I won't revile any more, it is senseless, I could drop down and never rise up again.
  • The French Soldier

    The French Soldier
    Paul was sent to no mans land to try and see what the enimies were up to. But in doing so Paul had to kill one of the young French soldiers to survive and return back to base. But he realizes that the French soldier had a wife and a young child. Pauls heart field with greef and felt bad for what war has turned him into. -We are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men, we are crude and sorrowful and superficial – I believe we are lost.
  • Suicide

    The impact of war made the young recruits go insane and they become suicidal. They have to try and get help from their other brothers to keep them from doing it. -We want to live at any price; so we cannot burden ourselves with feelings which, though they might be ornamented enough in peace time, would be out of place here.
  • Paul and Kropp

    Paul has broken his leg and wounded his arm while Kropp has wounded his leg right below his knee. Kropp has resoulved to comitting suicide if they have to amputate his leg. Paul fakes a fever just to go to the Catholic hospitial with him to make sure he is alright. -But the shelling is stronger than everything. It wipes out the sensibilities, I merely crawl still deeper in the coffin, it should protect me, and especially as Death himself lies in it too.
  • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

    The Russians signed the Armistice with Germany. The Russiand gave the Germans Poland, Ukraine, and other regions this stops alot of the Sicialist propaganda and payed 300 million roubles for prisoners. -He listens and for a moment his eye becomes clear. Then again he has the glowering eyes of a mad dog, he is silent, he shoves me aside.
  • Kat Dies

    killed by shrapnel in the head while he was being carried by Paul. Paul tries to save him and get him meds but by the time he gets him there he realized that Kat didnt make it. -Because he could not see, and was mad with pain, he failed to keep under cover, and so was shot down before anyone could go and fetch him.
  • Paul Dies

    After inhaling poison gas, Paul is given fourteen days of leave to recuperate. He finally dies after years of fighting and dies on a very peacful day in October 1918. -The soldier is on friendlier terms than other men with his stomach and intestines. Three-quarters of his vocabulary is derived from these regions, and they give an intimate flavor to expressions of his greatest joy as well as of his deepest indignation.
