Alan Chalmers, A Philosopher In The Down Under (1939 - Present)

  • Birth and Education

    Alan Chalmers was first born in 1939 in the town of Bristol in England. After high school, he then went to get his master's degree in Physic's at the University of Bristol. He taught Physic's for 2 years before deciding to go back to college to get a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science in 1971. Resource: https://www.uqp.com.au/authors/alan-chalmers
  • Moving to the Land of Australia

    Shortly after graduating in 1971, he accepted a Fellowship into the University of Sidney in Australia, where he became a lecturer in Philosophy. He enjoyed so much that he decided to stay in Sidney and stayed in the Philosophy department, until he eventually moved to the Science department in 1986.   • Writing The Books

    Alan decided to write books to help spread his thoughts and ideas to others, and he has written quite a few. One of his most iconic book's is about the philosophy of science titled 'What Is This Thing Called Science?'. This book was originally published in 1999, but it has been adopted as a international teaching resource in history and philosophy of science.   • Awards and Nowadays

    In 1988, Alan's work and development in history and the philosophy of science had earned him a spot as a Fellow in the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Years later, in 2003, he was also awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian Government for 'Service's to the Humanities in the area of History and Philosophy of Science'.
