His Great-Grandfather was Samory Toure who was a noted tribal chief that founded Wassoulou Empire.

    He obtained a post as clerk of the 'Compagnie du Niger Francais'. During that he was also working to complete an examination course which would allow him to join the Post and Telecommunications Department of colony's French administration.

    In 1941, he joined the post office and began to take interest in labor movements. He was successful in encouraging his fellow workers to hold a two-month long strike.

    He formed French Guinea's first trade union. After being one of the founders of the Postal Workers Union, He bacame its general secretary.

    He attended a CGT (General Confederation of Labor) congress in Paris before becoming the general secretary of the Treasury Workers' Union. He attended the West African congress and he became one of the founders of the RDA (African Democratic Rally) along with Felix Houphoet-Boigny of Cote d'lviore (futre President of Cote d'lviore). The RDA was a Pan-Africanist party whose main objective is to gain independence for all the French colonies in West Africa.

    He was dismissed from the Treasury Department for his extracurricular activities in politics. In 1947, he was briefly imprisoned by the French colonial administration. During that time, he decided to devote his time to guinea's workers' movements and campaigning for independence.

    He became the leader of the PDG, which was a localized section of the RDA that fought for the decolonization of Africa.
  • Independence

    "Guinea participated in the referendum on the new French constitution. On acceptance of the new constitution, French overseas territories had the option of choosing to continue their existing status". The French President " made it clear that a country pursuing the independent course would no longer receive French economic and financial aid or retain French technical and administrative officers." Guinea was the only French colony in Africa to push for the independence, and Toure made Presidency.

    Once Toure became President, he declared that the PDG would be the only legal party in Guinea. He had all the governing power for the next 24 years. He was re-elected multiple times becuse he ran unopposed.

    Most of Toure's policies were based on Marxism, and gained nationalization of foriegn companies and in the implementation of economic goals. Anyone who attempted to oppose him were arrested and either jailed or exiled.
  • Coup and Co-Presidency

    President Toure's main allies were Ghana and Mali. When Ghana's leader was overthrown in a coup, Toure offered him asylum in Guinea and offered him the co-presidency. He also offered asylum to activists such as Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael.
