Abraham Ortelius
Proposed the Americas had once been joined with Europe and Asia, he called it Continental drift. He believed it because him and his partners found similar plants and animal fossils around the shores of different continents. During that time period, the scientific community did not believe it because there was no hard evidence. -
Alfred Wegener
Believed the continents were in slow motion, also proposed theory of continental drift and plate tectonics. He used had an advanced level of geography and biology which helps his findings, he also came across fossils which became a exquisite help when he compared the properties of material from different locations. The scientific community did not believe him because he did not have strong evidence. -
Arthur Holmes
Arthur's hypothesis was that the currents of the heat in the Earth's mantle could push away the continents. he proposed the convection of the Earth's currents could move through the mantle the same way. The people in the scientific community disagreed with his hypothesis because he had no evidence to support his theory. -
Henry Hess
Believed in seafloor spreading. He believed in seafloor spreading because the ocean was shallower in the mid ocean ridges. But the people did not believe him because he didnt have enough hard evidence. -
Drummond Hoyle Matthews
Believed magnetic stripes on the sides of ridges on the ocean floor are a result of seafloor spreading, which was critical to the theory of plate tectonics. He found a symmetrical pattern of magnetic stripes on the ocean ridges. The scientific community agreed with the theory because it backed up Henry Hess's theory. -
Lawrence Morely
He believed that the rocks on the ocean floor were imprinted with the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. He studied the ocean surveys that showed the normal and reverse magnetism. The people of the scientific community agreed with the theory because it supported Wegener's theory. -
Jack Oliver
Believed in subduction zones and convergent plate tectonics. Focused more on earthquakes along with subduction zones in the pacific. The people of the scientific community agreed with the theory because he published a paper with research on his findings. -
Fredrick J. Vine
Fredrick J. Vine believed seafloor spreading was the cause of continental drift and plate tectonics. He created a 3-D computer software to calculate the magnetic anomalies of the ocean ridges and surrounding areas that he observed. The papers showed proof that continental drift had indeed occurred. The scientific community agreed do to the papers.
