  • Pg. 1-16

    David Pelzer gets abused daily and it just explains how his mother treats him and how she barely gives him any food. He shows up to school late one day and everyday the nurse calls him in to look at his injuries and to see if there is any new wounds. The nurse finally is sick of seeing him get hurt and giving out excuses so she tells the teachers and principal which then call the police to come and get David.

    In these pages it basically explains how David's aka "it' life was before his mom started to abuse him. In his family there was the dad, mom, and two brothers. They lived in Daly Ciy, San Francisco. During this time, David and his family go on lots of family vacations and activities. His mom loved to cook big meals and would clean the house constantly. This is when David felt protected and safe when he was in his mothers hands.

    Since David is just little, he can be a little naughty at times and that's when his mother starts to abuse him, She only abuses David and so David thinks that he is a bad boy. Every time David's dad isnt home, she abuses David worse and so David calls his dad his protector. His mom tries to burn his arm over the gas stove but David fights back out ruling her.

    David's mom then starts to starve David for his "bad behavior". She doesnt let him sit with the rest of the family during dinner and makes him do chores or stand downstairs in the garage where he sleeps. David only gets the little leftover scraps and nothing else forcing David to steal food out the the garbage or at school to feed his hunger. One day, David's mom gives him poison called ammonia to keep him from stealing the food out of the trash.

    In these pages something horrible happened to David. It's summer and while David is doing chores one day, his mother threatens him with a knife saying that she will kill him if he doesnt do them fast enough. His mom then falls because she is an alcoholic and is drunk and stabs David in the stomache. She then gets scared and helps David's wound and doesnt take him to the hospital. David shows his dad, but he does nothing about it and tells him to go finish the dishes. This makes David sad.

    David's dad starts to spend less time at home because whenever his dad tries to stop his mother from abusing him, all she does is hurt David more and yell at his father. David is very sad about this and feels less protective. Then David's mom starts to do a routine by making him clean the bathroom with a whole bunch of chemicals making David breathe it in making him cough up blood. She also makes him take freezing cold baths and makes him dry outside in the cold.

    David's mom randomly starts treating David nicely and gives him food and new clothes. Later that same day, social services come over and David then realizes why she was so nice. They leave and David's mom then beats David. David's now in the 5th grade and starts to give up hope and starts to rebel against his mom hoping that she'll kill him so that he can be free.
  • Pg. 164-174

    It's thanksgiving and David's mom surprisingly lets David sit with them for dinner but he recieves little food. David's dad and mom argue the whole dinner and that's when David's dad leaves for good. David gives up all hope. The book ends with David living a free life and taking his son, Stephen, where his family used to go before his mother started to abuse him.
