Ben runs away from the hospital, and goes to New York. First, he goes to search for his father that he never knew about, but cannot find him. Then, he goes to the American Museum of Natural History. There he meets a boy who becomes his best friend. At the museum there is a diorama that is the place where Ben is from, which is Gunflint Lake. There is this old woman at the museum that always comes everyday. -

Rose takes Ben to the place that Rose built a model city of New York with ittle objects from her son inside. Rose loved buildings. Rose and Ben just opened up the treasures inside the bui;dings. Ben put in his own, too. -

One direct characterization about Rose that depicts her apperance is, "An old woman with long white hair walked up to the diorama and stood right next to the boys."(Selznick 367) Another of Ben's best friend Jamie that depicts his apperance is,"The boy had long, curly, black hair and wore a striped t-shirt." (Selznick 321) -

One indirect characterization of Ben was he is determined to find his father, "Feeling desperate, he said, 'Do you know where he lives know?'" (Selznick 309) Another indirect characterization of Ben was he was clueless when he counted his money on the street. "As he stood there couting the bills, a hand darted out from behind him." (Selznick 265)
