William was very modest of this achievement. He was known for the words, “Boys, I only did my duty; the old flag never touched the ground!” -

There were many lasting positive effects of Wiliam Carney's Heroics in the Assault on Ft. Wagner. The image of Blacks were brought up by his actions. Many other African Americans were also inspired by this and signed up for the army.
