  • The Slave Revolt

    The Slave Revolt
    A slave revolt began in the northern province of Saint-Domingue and before long thousands of slaves took part in this act. For a little Toussaint did not join the revolt but after helping his past master to safety he joined forces fighting with aloneside the black forces. He slowly impressed the rebel leaders and soon gained his own amry. He trained his army and was a great military commander with amazing tactics.

    War broke out betweent the Spanish and the French. The Spaniards of Santo- Domingo and the black commanders joined forces. Toussaint moved up rank, becoming a general because of his great military ability. Toussaint had great victories in the north which helped place the Spaniards on top and nearly broke France to the ground.

    Toussaint switched over to the French side. He did this because the French National Convention had just freed all slaves. Spain and Britian did not free any slaves so he could not fight alongside the two countries. Many criticized his decision but his decision resulted in the Governor of Saint-Domingue to promote him to lieutenant governor.

    Toussaint was loved by Blacks and many Europeans. His actions in the leadership role he had was effective and helped to restore the economy. He let lots of emigre planters to come back to France going against French Revolutionary laws. He also made the former slaves work with military discipline but they were free and were not abused.

    Toussaint did work well with the governor Laveaux but he wanted to have more power so he slowly numbed out Laveaux. By the end of the year he connected his territory and had full contorl over the northern province.

    A French commissioner Sonthonax made Toussaint Commander in Cheif of French forces. After some time he had enough of Sonthonax and his views so he cleverly pushed him out of power.

    Toussaint's army was so powerful that they took out the British forces and the British lost over 15,000 soliders and also 10 million pounds(British currency).

    In 1802 the french invasion under General Charles Leclerc began in January it ended up being a far gratter force then expected after a few weeks of fighting, chief leaders came toghether making Toussaint agree to lay down his army in May.

    Toussaint raitered in honour to a plantation a little while later in june he was asked to go to a parley by the french General Jean-Baptiste Brunet because he thought he was ploting a rebellion.
  • His Passing

    His Passing
    When he was sent to Fort-de-Joux in the Jura Mountains in France after being seized at Brunet's house. At the fort he was questioned and consolidated and later died. He is remebered as a very influential leader who helped a great amount in freeing slaves and leading many military operations.
