Timetoast Civil War Timeline

  • Northwest Ordinance

    The US and England signed the Treaty of Paris. It was under the control of the National Congress. The territory from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River to the United States. This event was important because it added 5 new states. Outlawed slavery in the territory.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France. He has questions over the constitutionality of the purchase. It gave the US control of the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans. This event was important because it added 13 new states.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The number of free states and slave states was equal. When Missouri enter the states as a slave state it would threaten the balance of free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. This event was important because of the "36'30" line AKA: Mason-Dixon Line.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    It was issued by President James Monroe. It was a warning for the European countries not to recolonize Latin America. It was dependent on the British navy to enforce the Monroe Doctrine since the U.S. was very limited in military power. This event was important because it was the basis for future presidents' involvement with Latin American Affairs like Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson.

    Nullification Crisis

    It was created by John C. Calhoun from South Carolina. If a federal law (or tax) harms that state, then the states have the right to declare it null and void. States' rights issues were continuing to stew. This event was important because it was the first time states and federal authorities the tensions that almost led to a civil war.
  • Texas Annexation

    10 years as an independent nation. They had a problem with the balance of slave and free states. Texas was annexed by President James Polk. This event was important because there were border disputes with Mexico that led the nations to war.
  • Oregon Territory/Oregon Treaty

    It was Jointly occupied & claimed by the American, British, and Spanish. After the Adams-Onis treaty was signed it was claimed by the Spanish. A British-American border was made after Conflict between the Americans & the British. "54'40 or Fight!" were in the headlines of American newspapers. This event was important because the U.S. was granted control south of the 49th parallel and avoiding war after the Oregon Treaty of 1846.
  • Mexican Cession (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo)

    War with the Mexican Polk. Negotiated a treaty with the British to gain control. Less land than Americans had wanted. This event was important because it led to the Mexican-American War on April 25, 1846-February 2, 1848.
  • Compromise of 1850

    It introduced popular sovereignty to help decide the slave question. It made California a free state. The sale of slaves, not slavery was banned in Washington D.C. This event was important because of the New Fugitive Slave Law.

    Bleeding (Bloody) Kansas

    It was also known as the Border War. It was a series of violent civil battles in the Kansas Territory United States. It was a result of a political and ideological debate over the legality of slavery in the state of Kansas. This event was important because it significantly shaped American politics and contributed to the coming of the Civil War
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Stephen Douglas wanted to use popular sovereignty to decide if these states would be free states or slave states. This overturned the Missouri Compromise by allowing popular sovereignty north of "36'30". Both sent supporters to sway the votes in their favor. Pro-Slavery and Anti-Slavery forces had a competition with each other which turned to conflict violent. This event was important because it became the event known as Bleeding Kansas.

    Battle of Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter was near Charleston, South Carolina. The Confederate Army did not exist yet. The United States Army had to subsequent surrender. This event was important because this started the American Civil War.
  • Battle of Bull Run/Manassas

    This took place at Bull Run Creek outside Manassas, Virginia. The battle was led by General Irvin McDowell of the Union. This battle was also led by General Thomas J. Jackson of the Confederacy aka Stonewall Jackson. This event was important because the Confederate Won the battle.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This took place at Antietam Creek, Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle was led by General George McClellan of the Union. This battle was also led by General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy. This is important because it ended in a draw. This event was important because it is the single bloodiest day.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The document did not free the slave in Confederate control or border states. States that are in rebellion on Jan 1, 1863, would have to free their slaves. Emancipation notices the slave population, some of the slaves ran to Union lines and freedom. This event was important because it led to slavery being totally abolition in the United States.

    This took place at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The battle was led by General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union. This battle was also led by General John Pemberton of the Confederacy. This event was important because the Union Won the battle.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    This took place at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle was led by General George G. Meade of the Union. This battle was also led by General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy. This event was important because the Union Won the battle.
  • Gettysburg Address

    It was at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Gettysburg battlefield was visited by Lincoln to dedicate a cemetery for the fallen soldiers. The Civil War as he described it was a struggle to fulfill the Declaration of Independence. This event was important because Lincoln wanted a "new birth of freedom"

    Presidential Reconstruction

    Lincoln made the 10% Plan. Johnson wanted to keep the broad reconstruction plan Lincoln made. Congress had to impeach johnson to make sure he could not undermine the efforts of Congress as he was the Commander in Chief. This event was important because Johnson wanted to make the white South transition from slavery to freedom but no role to blacks in the politics of the South.

    Sherman's March to the Sea

    It was by William Tecumseh Sherman and it followed the total war strategy. He was on a march to the sea with his forces utilizing scorched earth methods from the Tennessee-Georgia border. His main objective was to capture the port at Savannah, Georgia. This event was important because Sherman's purpose in his march to the sea was to make Georgia's population abandon the Confederate cause.
  • 13th Amendment Passed

    This amendment put an end to slavery. Before southern states could form governments they had to recognize the 13th Amendment. Black Codes stoped freedmen from having rights. This document is important because they wanted African Americans to be equal to white people.
  • 14th Amendment Passed

    This amendment let all men birthright citizenship (if you were born in the states). Dred Scott's decision by recognizing the citizenship of African Americans was overturned by birthright citizenship. Citizens were afforded protections of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This Document is important because any persons born or naturalized n the United States were granted citizenship including former slaves.

    Congressional Reconstruction

    It was also known as Radical Reconstruction. The goal was to punish the South. The Military Reconstruction Act of 1867 split the former Confederacy into 5 military districts and they were controlled by the US Army. This event was important because it passed three Constitutional Amendments, called "Reconstruction Amendments".
  • 15th Amendment Passed

    This amendment allowed all men to veto not women. The motivation by desiring to ensure that the Republican party could make a political power in the south. African Americans wanted to keep the protection of their freedoms so they would vote for Republican candidates. This document is important because it made African American men no be able to veto.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    It was a decision to uphold the constitutionality of racial segregation the doctrine "separate but equal". It was all started by an African American train passage Homer Plessy who did want to sit in a car for blacks. Justice David J. Brewer did not participate in the case due to the sudden death of his daughter. This event was important because it established the constitutionality of racial segregation.
