Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in search of an alternative route to India, but instead landed in El Salvador. He is credited with the discovery of the New World. It lead to the creation of America. -

A movement in which people thought the Catholic church needed to be revived. It was important because it sparked battles between the Protestants and Catholics for many decades. -

St. Augustine
St. Augustine became the first permanent colony founded in Florida by the Spanish. This is important because it would soon be the oldest inhabited Europen settlement in the United States. -
Jamestown Founded
Jamestown was founded in Virgina by a joint-stock compant named the London Company. It has significance because it was the first sucessful colony. -
Tobacco grown
A cash crop grown within Virginia that becaming very popular as many people wanted it. Important because it gained the colonists a lot of money. -
First Piligrims in Plymouth
A form of Puritans who wanted to break away from the Church of England migrated to America on the Mayflower. Important because they had peaceful relations with the Indians. -
Mass. Bay Colony founded
A colony ran by Puritans that was gifted to them by King Charles. Important because they had political fredom and a representative form of government. -
Rhode Island founded
Roger Williams broke away from the Mass. colony and started his own on Rhode Island. Imporant because it had total religious freedom. -
Harvard Founded
This institution was established by vote of the Mass. Bay Colony and was created to train Puritan ministers. It has significance as it is the oldest institution for higher learning in the US. -
French and Indian War
Britain and France fougth for control over the Ohio River Valley and Canada. Britain won and gained control of all the remaining French possessions in Canada. Important because it was aan imperial war between powers within the US. -
Proclamtion of 1763
This was drafted inorder to alleviete issues with native relations after the French and Indian War. Important because it banned colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mtns. -
Sons Of Liberty
A group of Patriots during the Revolutionary War. Important because they fought against both the Loyalists and the British Crown. -
Thomas Paine's Common Sense
Paine had the thoughts that America should break away from England and become an independent, democratic, republic. This sparked many colonist rebellions between people that agreed with him. -
George Washington
The first President of the United States who was a patriot. Important because he led the Revolutionary Army in the fight for independence. -
The Second Great Awakening
This movement stressed a relgious philosophy based off of salvation through good deeds. It led to moral movements/reform groups such as the temperance movement. -
Temperance Movement
They wanted the banning of alcohol as they associated it with evil and bad things. It was created by Evangelical Protestants and ultimately did lead to the removal of alochol within the US which sparked rebellion. -
Dorothea Dix
Advocated for people who suffered from mental illnessess and sought to reform the treatment of them. Important because she played a major role in gaining reform for them. -
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
This was a detailed autobiography of an escaped slave and abolitioist Fredrick Douglass. Important because it opened the eyes of many to what slavery comsisted of. -
Seneca Falls Convention
Women met to discuss the social standings of women and their right to vote. Important because they wrote the Declaration of Sentiments which lead to the pushing for women to be able to vote from then on. -
Underground Railroad
A group of abolitionists that helped slaves escape to freedom by setting up routes to the North. Harriet Tubman is known for her work in it. Important because many slaves escaped slavery from this. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that influenced views on slavery. Ultimately it produced abolitionist movements and increased sectional conflict between the North and South. -
Civil War
A war between the Confederates and Union over the issues of states' rights and slavery. Important because the North won and it led to the reconstruction era. -
Reconstruction Era
The period after the Civil War the prompted the unification of the North and South. Important because the South became under the control of the North and the idea of the New South formed. -
KKK Founded
The Ku Klux Klan was formed in order to promote and keep white supremacy. Important because for decades they made it hard for minorites especially African Americans to achieve equal rights such as voting. -
Carlisle Indian School
An assimilation effort by the US govt to assimilate Indian children and teach them English values and customs. Important because it led to the rebellion of some Indian groups. -
Helen Hunt Jackson's A Century of Dishonor
A book shaming and pointing out all the wrongdoing the Indians endured. It led to a creation of a committee to adress Indian affairs and ultimately to the Dawes Act. -
The Hull House
A settlement house created by Jane Addams whose puropse was to provided services and educational opportunites to people who were mostly immigrants. -
NAWSA Founded
The National American Women's Sufferage Association was formed inorder to achieve women's right to vote. It was a valuable source in the passing of the nineteenth amendement. -
Atlanta Compromise
A speech made by Booker T. Washington that said that African Americans should focus on economic gains and work there way up the ladder form there to achieve equal rights. Led to different views on how to achieve equal rights. -
The Jungle
A book written by Upton Sinclair that inspired federal alws regulating drugs, meat, and food. Led to the Food and Drug Administration. -
NAACP
The National Advancement of Colored People was created to gain blacks equal rights and to eliminate racial discrimination. Played a huge role in all marches and boycotts in later years. -
National Women's Party founded
Lead by Alice Paul who mission was to achieve equal rights through the Equal Rights Amendment. Important because it really did not gain support form congres and other women led groups. -
Red Scare
The American public was scared the communism would spread to the US. Led to the stopping of labor strikes as it could be seen a an act made towards communism. -
Victory Gardens
American citizens were encouraged to grow their own food during times of war. It encouraged patriotism. -
Levittown
Inexpensive identical homes built in the suburbs of NY. It is important because it marked conformity within the US. -
Southern Christian Ledership Conference
An orginazation whose goals were to mobilize the power of black churches on behalf of African American rights. They were known for boycotts and its leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. -

Formed by students whose aim was to coordinate a nonviolent attack on segregation and other racism issues. They were known for sit-ins -
March on Washington
MLK delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech speaking about racial harmony and how they could/should achieve it. Important because it can be conneectede or linked to several acts being passed. -
MLK Assassinated
He was shot and killed by James Earl Ray. This was major because he ultimately helped shape America's view on African Americans and it led to riots.
