After John stole money from his business partner, and brother-in-law Jim Hutchinson, he bought a ticket to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The reason for his departure, was because he bankrupted the gardening business. He felt like everyone hated him, and that he had to get away. He chose the city of Saskatoon, because it was described as the '" The Fasted Growing City in the World"' (12). -

John moved to Prince Albert
In the fall of 1914, John Wilson moved to Prince Albert. "... falling wages ( labourers had yet to organize a success union), high living costs and the acute housing shortage prompted him to move to Prince Albert..." (18). Upon his arrival, John planned to start a tomato growing business. Soon after he started his business, his hopes were ruined, as a hail storm flatted his crop. -
John got rejected from the army for the first time
As soon as WW1 was declared, men swarmed into recruitment offices. Among these men, was John Wilson. "As soon as he heard war was declared, John Wilson headed to Prince Albert to enlist..." (20). Everyone was in such a hurry to enlist, beccause they were worried the war would be over by the time they arrived. Unfortunately John was rejected for the war, because he had a history for having bad lungs. -
John became a member of The Royal North West Mounted Police
Two weeks after John got rejected from the army, he was walking down Main Street Prince Albert when a poster caught his eye. The poster was for The Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP). "The Royal North West Mounted Police were looking for recruits" (20). On the poster there were certain requirements such as, literacy, height and so on, which he fulfilled. He went straight to the Prince Albert detachment to enlist, and he passed. -
John is stationed in Blaine Lake
After John finished his police training in Regina, his new job took him to Blaine Lake. "In the town of Blaine Lake, everyone noticed the new policeman who arrived in July 1915" (23). Blaine Lake was considered a vigorous, and forward-looking town, and it served a large area between Saskatoon, and Prince Albert. In this town, John was housed in a small building on Main Street, which the town council had purchased for the purpose. -
John meets Jessie
Other new arrivals in Blaine Lake, included John and Allison Patterson, with there four children, Mac, James, Jessie and Kate. The Patterson's house was next door to the barn where John Wilson stabled his horse. In the summer of 1916, John Patterson invited the new Mountie home for supper, and there he met Jessie. "...a willowy sixteen-year-old with a lovely high-cheekboned face and thick brown hair" (25). -
John gets rejected for the second time

John is diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB)
In spite of how ill John has felt, he wasn't prepared for the shock in store when he saw the doctor at the end of the summer. He sat on the examining table, as the doctor's stethoscope explored his back and chest. Then doctor then broke the news to John. '" I'm sorry to have to tell you, Jack, but you have TB"' (32). John was diagnosed with Tuberculosis, a fatal disease in 1917, almost 30 years before the discovery of antibiotics. Only 10 percent survived from it. -
Polly arrives in Canada
On April 12, 1918, the ship that carried Polly docked in Halifax. "The Mauretania docked at Halifax harbour at 11:28 A.M., April 12,1918" (45). When she arrived, she had to a medical examination, which was short. From there, Polly passed through customs, and boarded onto the CPR train that would take her west. -

Polly finds out about Jessie
One evening, John went out to meet some friends when Polly found a letter in his jacket pocket. The letter was addressed in a women`s handwriting, so Polly took out the letter and opened it. 'It began, "Dearest Jack"' (57). Polly read the letter, and was in disbelief. She couldn't belief that her John, was planning to marry another woman. -
John shoots, and kills Polly
When Polly arrived back in Saskatoon, John picked her up at the station, and the went on a trip for business. John rode with a shotgun next to him, and shot a a couple animals on the way. As it got darker, Polly realized that John didn't put the gun away. " It was getting to dark to shoot. But he raised the gun again" (79). She looked up, but there were no geese. As she turned, she was looking into the barrel of the gun. At the loud explosion, the heart of Polly Wilson stopped beating. -
