Release
The Giver shows Joans what a release really his. He shows Jonas the video of his dad releasing one of the newborn twins. Jonas realizes that there is no 'release', that they are being killed. He now thinks of his father much differently because he doesn't know what he is doing. -
The Airplane
Jonas sees an airplane fly overhead and is frightened because he has never seen one before. -
The apple
Jonas is playing catch with Asher and sees a change in the apple. He doesn't know what it is or whats happening. -
Jonas's dad breaks a rule
Jonas's dad breaks a rule by looking at the newborns name and shares it with his family -
Gabe is brought home
Jonas's dad brings Gabriel home to stay with them because he is having trouble sleeping. -
Jonas does community hours at the House of Old.
Jonas and Fiona bond by bathing elders and getting to know about their lifestyle. -
Jonas has a Stirring
Jonas has a dream with Fiona where he has a 'wanting' feeling for her. He tells his parents and starts taking the pill. -
Jonas gets his job assignment at the Ceremony of 12
Jonas gets singeled out at the Ceremony of 12 and the cheif elder skips his number. Later he finds out he is to be the Reciever of Memory. -
Jonas gets his rules
Jonas gets his job rules and is confused by them. He learns he is allowed to lie, endure physical pain, etc. -
Jonas witnesses snow in his first memory
Jonas's first memory is of a person sledding through snow, and he learns what the job is about. -
Jonas recieves a sunburn memory
Jonas recieves a sunburn memory and doesn't know if he can handle his new job. -
The Giver
Since Jonas is the new reciever of memory, the previous one tells Jonas to call him 'The Giver'. -
Jonas goes to his job and recieves his first memory
Jonas goes to his first day on the job and gets his first memory from the previous reciever. -
Jonas gets color
Jonas notices something different about Fiona's hair and asks the Giver. He tells Jonas about color and transmits memories of rainbows. -
Sameness
Jonas talks to the Giver about what life would be like if there was no such thing as Sameness. They agree it is a dangerous idea. -
Jonas's new life
Jonas learns that his life will be different from his friends. He may not share memories, information, books and may not even apply for a spouse/ children. -
Jonas recieves pain.
Jonas gets a memory of a broken leg. He is astounded because injuries like that do not happen in his community. He also remembers that he may not get medication for job related pain. -
Jonas wants a change
Jonas wants everyone to experience the memories. He wants a change of rules so everyone can see color and experience the past. But he knows and learns its not going to happen for sameness. -
Jonas looks after Gabe for the night.
Jonas learns Gabe might be released to elsewhere so he lets Gabe stay with him at night. When the baby is crying Jonas goes to comfort him and accidently transfers memories to him. He learns Gabe has the same ability to be the future reciever. -

Jonas knows he has no choice but return to his job. He recieves many plesant memories such as birthday parties, museums, horses & campfires. -
War
Jonas goes to work a few days later and sees the Giver in pain. He goes to comfort the Giver and accidently recieves a memory of warfare. He was overwhelmed with fear and understands why the law of sameness was in place, he didn't want to go back to work. -
The Givers favorite.
Jonas revieces the Givers favorite memory of a family in a cabin in the woods durning Christmas time. He learns about grandparents, family and love. -
Lies
Jonas asks his parents if they love him. His parents tell him about word accuracy and how irrelevant that word is. He tells him he understands, but it was his first lie to his parents. -
Gabe
Jonas starts transferring memories to Gabe each night hoping that it will make him sleep more soundly so he isnt released. He tells Gabe there could be love and explains some of his feelings. -
Pills
Something tells Jonas to stop taking his morning pills. He starts throwing them away and doesn't tell anyone. -
Holiday
Everyone gets a day off from work and classes because of a unexpected Holiday. Jonas's friends play a game based off of war, Jonas realizes how bad the game is and tries to make Asher understand. -
Fiona
Fiona asks Jonas to go on a bike ride along the river. Jonas wants to spend time with his good friend but knows he has more important stuff to do. He rejects her and realizes his love for her and Asher. -
Jonas's dad
Jonas's dad has to release a newborn child to Elsewhere. Since Jonas has learned so much recently, he wonders what that actually means and asks his dad about it. He says someone from Elsewhere comes to pick the child up. -
Rosemary
The Giver tells Jonas about Rosemary and how he loved her. But then explains that she applied for release and understands how little Jonas knows about it. -
Jonas and Gabe make it to Elsewhere
They safely make it out of the community and escape to Elsewhere. They end up at the cabin in the snow at Christmas time.
