The Bet
The lawyer and banker make a bet. The bet is if the lawyer can stay in solitary confinement for 15 years the banker has to pay him 2 million dollars. -

The First Year
The first year the lawyer suffered severely from loneliness and depression. He played piano day and night from his lodge. He refused wine and tobacco. The first years he read novels with a complicated love plot, sensational and fantastic stories. -
The Second Year
The prisoner no more played piano and it was silent. He asked more for classics. -
The Fifth Year
He started playing music again, he also asked for wine. he spent his time doing nothing but eating and drinking and lying on his bed, frequently yawning and talking angry to himself. He did not read any books. He would sometimes spend hours writing in the night and in the morning tear up all that he had written. He would cry alot. -
The Sixth Year
In the second half of the sixth year he started studying language, philosophy, and history. -
The Letter
The lawyer wrote a letter in six different languages. -
The Tenth Year
The lawyer only reads Gospel and Theology and histories of religion followed the Gospels. -
Last Two Years
The prisoner read an immerse quantity of books quite randomely. At one time he was busy with natural science; then he would ask for Byron or Shakespeare. He also at same time demanded books on chemistry, and a manual of medicine, and a novel, and some treatise on philosophy or theology. -
The Last Day
The Prisoner escapes the prisoner 5 minutes before the bet finishes. He does not get paid and since he is not looking forward to the money any more he escaped before he wins the bet
