Humanism was an activity of reformation engaged by scholars, writers, and civil leaders. They all wanted to create a citizenry able to speak and write with eloquence and clarit, engaging in civic life of their community. It is important because it emphasized the importance of humans and the secular power of the church. -

Martin Luther and the 95 Theses
Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the church doors. The 95 Theses were a series of grievences against the Catholic Church, mainly about the selling of indulgences. Martin Luther's beginning goal was to reform the Church, however it ended up creating a new branch of Christianity, called Protestantism which became widely spread across Europe. It is important because it showed how challenging the church became more acceptable. -
The Rise of Deism
Deism is the belief that reason and observation of the natural world determine there is a higher power, yet he doesn't interfere with human life. It was important because it helped great scientists such as Issace Newton explain their findings without the power of the Church stopping them. -
John Locke
John Locke lived from August 29, 1632 to October 28, 1704. John Locke is known as the father of Classical Liberalism. He contributed to the Declaration of Independence with his contribution to classical republicanism and liberal theory. He's known as one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers. He's important because his ideas fueled many revolutions such as the American Revolution. -
Salon
Salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held to amuse one another. This was important to the Enlightenment because it was the first place that people were able to go and discuss the world, it helped to create more education opportunities for many during the meetings. -
Academy of Science
The Academy of Science was founded by Louis XIV to encourage and protect the French Scientific research. It's important because it was teh forefront of scientific development whic hled to France having some of the greatest scientists in Europe. The Academy is still around todya. It was also important because it set up high standards for all of the other academies of science. -
Naturalism
Naturalism is the laws of nature operate in the universe and nothing beyond the natural universe exists. It is important because it allowed for science and philosophy to conjoin and it removed more power from the Church. -
Reading Revolution
In 1750 reading switched from people reading intensively to extensively. This helped people become more educated and it set up reading standards across Europe. -
Encyclopedia
The encyclopedia was a book full of many different subjects written by many differet contributors. It was edited by Denis Diderot and Jean la Rond d'Alembert. It was innovative because the Church didn't pay for it, the readers paid for it. It's important because it was seen as a way to reform French Society. -
James Madison
James Madison lived from Marach 16, 1751 to June 28, 1836. James Madison was an American statesmen and political theorist. He is important because he is known as the Father of the Constitution and author of the Bill of Rights which those two documents are major parts of the foundation of the United States. -
Enlightened Despotism
Enlightened Despotism is a form of absolute monarchy in which rulers are influenced by the Enlightenment. This is important because it changed the wya rulers ruled their countries. The power went from emerging from Diving Right to emerging from social contract.
