Tale of Two Cities

  • Dr. Manette sees the Evremonde crime and is imprisoned.

If not for this then much of the book wouldn't have happened.
  • Dr. Manette is released to Defarge.

Manette is released from prison, and travels to England. Without this Defarge never would have found the letter and they couldn't have accused Darney, with the letter, when he went back.
  • Darney's trial in England for Treason. Acquitted.

It teaches us that John Barsad is a paid spy. We also are given the comparison in how similar Carton and Darney are in appearance.
  • Marquis' carriage runs over and kills a child

He ran over Gaspards child. which causes more events to happen later. It also shows how little care the aristocracy cared about the peasants.
  • Gaspard is hanged for murder of the Marquis.

After having ridden back to the marquis' house he stabs him and is later hanged for the crime. He deserved it after what we did but is also increases the hate of the aristocracy.
  • Darney marries Lucie Manette

In doing so it also includes Lucie and eventually their daughter in the knitted hit list of Madame Defarge.
  • Storming of the Bastille.

The Bastille was a a symbol of the oppression of the aristocracy. In taking it over they had started a major upset of the aristocracy.
  • Burning of the Evremonde chateau.

The people hated the Evremonde family and in doing so they continued to show that they were overthrowing the aristocracy. It also is the reason they took Gabelle to get Charles to come to England so they can kill him.
  • Darney returns to Revolutionary France and and is imprisoned.

Darney returns to England because of his promise to Gabelle. This is will then allow the French to capture him and imprison him as an aristocrat. This means that they could kill him and to the best of their knowledge exterminate the Evremonde line.
  • Manette saves Darney from slaughter by the mob.

Manette knows that the prisoners are being dragged out into the streets and slaughtered. The doctor tries to use his influence as a prisoner of the Bastille to get him free but it only succeeds in getting a promise for a trial sometime.
  • Darney condemned by the doctors journal.

Defarge reads the journal. The doctor condemns all Evremondes after the crime he had witnessed and being thrown in solitary confinement for 18 years.Everything that the doctor has done to help Darney goes out the window with one simple letter he wrote many years ago.
  • Carton changes places with Darney in prison.

Carton has told Lucie that he would die for her or anyone she loved. He is keeping that promise while also showing a completely different side of him. He is proving his loyalty to his promise though he know that it will kill him.
  • Carton guillotined

This is important because it not only makes Carton feel like he has finally accomplished something and made his life useful. He was able to save Charles which makes Lucie very happy because she has her husband back though she loses a good friend in Carton.
  • Darney re-arrested because of the Defarges.

They finally manage to get Charles out of prison and sure enough Darney is re-arrested. They now have even more evidence that they seem very certain will get Darney sent to the guillotine. The doctor wont be able to help him this time and it seems to spell doom for him and his family.
