  • American Revolution

    Date: 1775-1783
    People Involved: Colonists (George Washington) VS Great Britain (King George)
    Where: 13 Colonies
    The reason it happened: Colonists declaring Independence This event is what started The United States of America and gave us our freedom.
  • Louis & Clark Expedition

    •1804-1806
    •People Involved: Meriweather Lewis, William Clark & Sacagawea
    •Place: St Louis to The Pacific
    •The reason it happened: It was after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 to explore and to map the newly acquired territory, to find a practical route across the western half of the continent, and to establish an American presence in this territory.
    •The expedition helped establish the U.S. presence in the newly acquired territory and beyond and opened the door to further exploration.
  • California Gold Rush

    •1848-1855
    •The people involved: James W. Marshall, Native Americans & The Forty Niners.
    •Place: California
    •The reason it happened: Rumors started to spread and were confirmed in March 1848 by San Francisco newspaper publisher and merchant Samuel Brannan. •After the Gold Rush, California was perceived as a place of new beginnings, where great wealth could reward hard work and good luck
  • The Civil War

    •The people involved: Union Army VS Confederate Army, Abe Lincoln, Jefferson Davis.
    •Place: United States
    •the reason it happened: Conflicts about Anti-Slavery •This war is the reason Slavery was abolished, Territorial integrity was preserved, Dissolution of the Confederate States and
    Beginning of the Reconstruction Era
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    •Lincoln issued the proclamation in the third year of the Civil War in order to free all people being held as slaves in the south. It also allowed black men to enter the army and navy.
    •The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in Washington, DC.
    Lincoln issued the Proclamation to weaken the South.
    •The document was an important step for the country to take morally. Finally, the abolitionist movement in the United States was seen as successful in the eyes of the nation.
  • The 19th Amendment

    The 19th Amendment is important because it gave women the right to vote.
    The Amendment was ratified in Washington, DC.
    President Wilson addressed the Senate in favor of women’s suffrage after years of protesting from women’s rights groups. Some groups involved in the fight were the National American Woman Suffrage Association,and Alice Paul, the famous suffragette.
    This event meant that democracy wasn’t just for men. Women could help decide the future of our country.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression began when the New York Stock Market crashed in 1929 and caused a worldwide economic downturn. Reckless spending and investment caused the crash and millions were unemployed and hungry and had no money.
    Hoover was president and the way he handled the crisis is seen as a failure.
    The Great Depression is an important event because it showed how economics can go really wrong in this country and showed us how to avoid problems this big in the future.
  • Pearl Harbor

    In 1941 the Pearl Harbor Naval base in Hawaii was attacked by hundreds of Japanese fighter planes and the assault lasted hours. American battleships and Airplanes were destroyed and more than 2,000 soldiers died.
    Japan attacked the US because of bad negotiations and they wanted to be ready for war.
    This event is important because President Franklin Roosevelt declared war on Japan the next day and that’s how the US entered World War 2.
  • Civil Rights Act

    In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Act which ended segregation in public places and discrimination in employment. The act was signed in Washington, DC and became the law of the land. Various groups helped push to make it law and bring equality to African Americans, like the NAACP. The Act is important and should be included on this list because it was a big step for equality in the US and justified the civil rights movement which so many people thought was a waste of time.
  • 9/11

    On this day the World Trade Centers in NYC were attacked by hijacked planes and nearly 3,000 people were killed with more wounded. The plane was hijacked by terrorists because they wanted to harm America in response to American actions in the middle east George Bush was president. The event is important because it caused Bush to declare war on the terrorist group & started the War on Terror. The event changed the way we think about the entire world because now we are more careful about security.
