  • Francesco Redi

    Francesco Redi
He was born in Arezzo, Italia in 1626. He was a physician and poet.
In 1668, he proved that spontaneous generation was wrong. He showed that the maggots doesn't arise spontaneously in rotting meat
  • John Needham

    John Needham
John Needham was an English biologist and Catholic priest, he was born in 1713 in London, United Kingdom.
In 1745 he affirmed that spontaneous generation could occur, and he contradicts Redi's conclusions.
The experiment was consisted of killing the microorganism by heating the broth to its boiling point, and poured it into flasks. After a while the broth cooled, he sealed them.
After a while, he observed living microorganisms in the sealed broth.
  • Lazzaro Spallanzani

    Lazzaro Spallanzani
Was born in 1729, Scandiano, Italia. He was a naturalist, he believes that spontaneous generation wasn't exists, in 1729 to 1799 provided and contradict Needham. He poured broth into flasks and sealed them. Next, he boiled the flasks for a long time, to kill microorganisms.
After a while, the broth did not have any trace of life. However, once he unsealed the flask, microorganisms rapidly grew in the broth.
  • Louis Pasteur

    Louis Pasteur
He was born in 1822, Dole, France. He was a chemist, physicist, mathematician, and bacteriologist. Re-created the experiment and reasoned that the contamination came from life forms in the air.
He designed bottles with S-curved necks. He placed a nutrient-enriched broth in one of the swan-neck bottles, boiled the broth inside the bottle, and observed no life in the jar for one year. Then he broke off the top of the bottle or tilted the flask, and noted life forms in the broth.
