Christopher Colombus' First Voyage
Christopher Columbus sailed for the first time in 1492 for spain. He was in search of a faster route to Cathay for riches and spices. He landed in North America, but he thought he was in India. He came across many natives. This was important because it led to more exploration of the "New World". -

Cortes' Voyage
Cortes sailed for Spain in 1519. He was in search for gold. He explored and conquered in Mexico. He conquered the Aztecs and this was important because he then reported back that there were tons and tons of gold, which sparked exploration in the New World. -

Pineda's Voyage
Pineda sailed for Spain in 1519. He mapped the Gulf Coast(from Florida to Texas. This was important because it led another exploration to check out the map. -

De Vaca's Voyage - Part 1
De Vaca went on a voyage for Spain. His original leader was Narvez, who was in search of gold. Esteban, slave from Morocco came on the expedition as well. -

De Vaca Discoers Texas
De Vaca enters Texas because their boat has shipwrecked and De Vaca and the crew are lost. He was in Texas for eight years. The tribes he met included the Karankawas, who were welcoming at the time. -

Fray Marcos and Esteban's Journey.
Fray Marcos, a priest, and 300 Spanish men were sent to study the land in Texas and evaluate the Natives. Esteban goes in to the village of the Zuni Indians and they kill him. Fray Marcos then reported back that there was a city of gold. -

Moscoso's Expedition
Moscoso sailed for Spain in 1539. His original leader was De Soto, but Moscoso took over when he died. De Soto died from a fever ear the Mississippi River. Moscoso gave the same basic report that Coronado did that left Texas untouched by Europe for 150 years. -

Coronado's Expedition
Coronado was in serch for the 7 cities of gold. Fray Marcos was their guide to thee cities. Then a slave named Turk told them about Quivera. He then "led" them to the city of adobe and stone. The guide then was strangled to death after digging his own grave. Fray Marcos slips away. While on his search, he discovered The Grand Canyon and the Palo Duro Canyon. His report was - don't come to Texas, doesn't have anything valuable for Spain. This left Texas un-explored for 150 years.
