Friedrich Miescher
Friedrich Miescher isolated nuclein and was the first to identify DNA as a separate molecule. He laid the groundwork for people to discover more about the molecular structure of DNA. I find it very interesting that he had a hearing impairment -
Frederick Griffith
He tested lethal and nonlethal strands of pneumonia on mice and was the first to identify the transforming priceable. His work later went on to help prove that DNA was hereditary material. It is very interesting that he used heat to kill the bacteria to help him test his theories. -
Barbara McClintock
She published a paper explaining how chromosomes are the basis of genetics. I found it interesting the McClintock won a Nobel prize in ‘83 for her work in medicine. -
Linus Pauling
Pauling worked with proteins and molecular structure. He found the first molecular disease. I find it very interesting that he and his wife fought against nuclear weapons. -
Oswald Avery, Maclyn McCarty & Colin McCleod
They isolated the DNA in heat-killed pneumonia proved the transformation theory. I find it very interesting that they worked as a great team and used the information from, Griffith to help them and ended up proving his work. -
Erwin Chargaff
He found that the amount of A is always equal to the amount of T and the amount of G is always equal to E. I find it very interesting that his discovery paved the way for many other very important ones about DNA. -
Rosalind Franklin & Maurice Wilkins
They worked to find the structure of DNA through X rays. Wilkins gave photo 51, an x-ray that Franklin took that relieved the secret to the structure of DNA, and gave it to Watson and Crick. I find it interesting that Franklin was never giving the credit that she deserved. -
James Watson & Frances Crick
Watson and Crick used modeling to figure out the double helix structure of DNA. Later Watson published the double helix, the story of their findings. I find it interesting that in the book it was not mentioned that they took photo 51 from franklin. -
Alfred Hershey & Martha Chase
They covered proteins and DNA with radioactive ions to see what would be passed down. They fully proved that DNA was responsible for heredity. I find it very interesting that Hershey won a noble prize later in his life. -
Matthew Meselson & Franklin Stahl
They demonstrated how DNA replicates into one daughter unit and one parental unit. They made it possible to prove how DNA replicated therefore providing a physical bias for the genetic phenomena of heredity and diseases. -
Frederick Sanger
Sanger along with Berg and Gilbert won the Nobel prize in 1980 for discovering the base sequence in nucleic acids. He used the enzyme copying method. I find it interesting that he also won a Nobel prize in 1958 -
Paul Berg
Berg developed methods for splitting DNA and won a Nobel prize with Sanger and Gilbert in 1980. I found it interesting that he graduated from Penn State. -
Kary Mullis
He developed a technique to copy DNA incredibly quickly. He won a Noble Prize for this in 1993. -
J. Craig Venter
Venter along with his team determined the genomic sequence of a bacteria that causes ear infections. I find it very interesting that he was interested in making a profit.
