Plate Tectonics Thoeries

  • Abraham Ortelius's Theory

    Abraham Ortelius's Theory
He noticed that the coastlines of South America and Africa seemed to fit together. He suggested that the continents were once joined together. Most people disagreed with his theory, mainly because he did not have enough evidence.
  • Alfred Wegener's Theory

    Alfred Wegener's Theory
South America and Africa seemed to fit together like puzzle pieces. He proposed that the continents were all once part of a super-continent called Pangaea. his idea was rejected from the scientific community, mainly because he could not explain exactly how the continents moved.
  • Arther Holmes' Theory

    Arther Holmes' Theory
He suggested that continental drift could be explained by currents in the Earth's mantle. These currents would be able to move the continents, and in turn, prove that Alfred Wegner was indeed correct. Most disagreed with his theory, mainly because he was lacking the evidence to support it.
  • Harry H Hess's Theory

    Harry H Hess's Theory
He suggested that oceanic crust forms along mid ocean ridges, and that the rock then spreads away from the ridges. He found that oceans were shallower near mid ocean ridges, prompting him to jump to this conclusion. However, he still needed more solid proof before he could more strongly support his theory
  • Fredrick J Vine.

    Fredrick J Vine.
He worked with Drummond to create 3D computer software that calculated magnetic anomalies in the ocean. he found that newer crust was magnetically aligned with Earth's geomagnetic field. Unfortunately, the scientific community rejected the Vine-Matthews Hypothesis simply because there was not enough strong evidence to support it.
  • Drummond Hoyle Matthews' Theory

    Drummond Hoyle Matthews' Theory
He worked with Fredrick J Vine to see magnetic variations on the sea floor. He found that blocks of Earth's crust were magnetized with the Earth's magnetic field. Their hypothesis needed more solid evidence to support their theory before people would support it.
  • Lawrence Morley's Theory

    Lawrence Morley's Theory
He worked with Fredrick and Drummond, but did do a lot of work alone. He was able to detect magnetic patterns on the ocean floor that somewhat resembled zebra stripes. This prompted him to conclude that the magnetic patterns were due to the Earth's poles switching.
  • Dan Makenzie's Theory

    Dan Makenzie's Theory
He suggested that there were two layers of mantle, and that both are in motion. He used his knowledge of thermodynamics to prove this true. His theory was accepted, because he had solid proof
