Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born as the 6th child of a tailor and a seamstress of February 25, 1841 in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, France. -
Became Apprentice to a Porcelain Painter
Pierre became a pocelain painter's apprentice and learned how to copy designs to decorate plates and other dishware. Soon after, he did decorative painting for a living for a short period of his life. -
Painted from the Louvre
He started studying and copying some great paintings from the Louvre at the age of 19. -
Entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts
He enrolled in the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts" where he was taught by Charles Gleyre and Met Frederic Bazille, Claude Monet, and Alfred Sisley. He also met Camille Pissarro and Paul Cezanne through Monet. -
Renoir won acceptance in the Paris Salon exhibit
Pierre won his first acceptance into the Paris Salon in 1864, he showed his painting, "La Esmeralda", which was inspired by a character from Victor Hugo's Norte Dame de Paris. -
Second acceptance in the Paris Salon
The following year, he showed the portrait he painted of William Sisley, the wealthy father of Alfred Sisley. The salon helped him get his name known but he still struggled to make a living. -
Renoir met Lise Trehot
Pierre met Lise Trehot, a seamtress who soon became his model in 1867. Lise was featured in paintings such as "Diana" (1867) and "Lise" (1867). Reports say that the two became romantically involved and she gave birth to his first child, a daughter named Jeanne in 1870, although Pierre never publicly acknowledged her. -
Pierre served in France's army
Renoir took a break from his works in 1870 to serve in France's army against Germany. He was assigned to a cavalry unit, but he soon felt ill with dysentery, a diarrheic sickness. He didn't see any works done during the war, although his friend Bazille was killed that November. The war ended in 1871 and he moved back to Paris. -
10-year friendship ended with Jules de Couer and his family
When his friendship with Jules de Couer and his family ended, he not only lost the valuable support gained by the association, but the stay at their property near Fontainebleu and it's scenic forest. This resulted in the distinct change of painting subjects. He remained close to Monet, Bazille, and Sisley, he often stayed at their homes and shared their studio. -
Impressionist Exhibition
His friends including Pissarro, Monet, and Edgar Degas decided to show their works in Paris in 1874, and this became known as the Impressionist Exhibition. The name is derived from critical view, as impressions rather than finished paintings. The first impressionist exhibition was not successful with 6 of his paintings shown, his found other ways to make himself be known. -
Painted Madame Charpentier and Her Children
Renoir met wealthy publisher Georges Charpentier and wife Marguerite. They took interest in him and invited him to several social gatherings at their Paris home. Through the Charpentiers, he met famous writers like Gustave Flaubert and Mile Zola. He painted "Madame Chapentier and Her Children" which was feautured in the Paris Salon and brought critical admiration. -
Made Inspirational Journeys
Pierre made several insprational journeys accross Europe in the early 1880s with the funded money from his comission. He visited Algeria where he associated with Eugene Delacroix and Italy and spent time in the south of France. He visited Madrid, Spain to see Diego Velazquez's works and saw Titan's masterpieces in Florence, Italy and paintings of Raphael in Rome. He had to stay in Algeria for 6 weeks after getting Pneumonia, which caused permanent damage to his respiratory system. -

Pierre painted "Dance in the Country", "Dance in the City", and "Dance at Bougival during the time of his journey.

Met Richard Wagner and painted his portrait
Renoir met the famous composer Richard Wagner at his home in Palermo, Sicily. He worked on a portrait of Richard in Naples, Italy in just 35 minutes. -
Spent Summer in Guernsy and Created 15 paintings
Renoir spent his summer of 1883 in Guernsey and created 15 paintings in little over a month. One of these was "Moulin Huet", a bay in St. Martin's, Guernsey. -
Hired Suzanne Valadon as his model
Renoir hired Suzanne Valadon as his model in 1885 who posed for him and many fellow painters. She was featured in "The Bathers" (1885-7) and "Dance at Bougival" (1883). She eventually bacame a leading painter. -
Had 1st son, Pierre
He had his first son, Pierre with Aline Charigot. He became a stage and film actor. -
Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee
While Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1887, Renoir dontoated several paintings to the "French Impressionists Paintings catalog upon the queen's associate, Phillip Richourg's request. -
Married Aline Victorine Charigot
Pierre married his long-time friends Aline Victorine Charigot who had been his model for many of his paintings like "Mother Nursing Her Child" (1886) and "Luncheon of the Boating Party" (1881). He painted many scenes of his wife, children, and their nurse, Gabrielle Renard, Aline's cousin. -
Battled with Rheumatism
Renoir battled with rheumatism arthritis, a disease marked by inflammation and pain in the joints, muscles, or fibrous tissue. This plauged him for the rest of his life. -
Had 2nd son, Jean
He had his second son, Pierre with Aline Charigot. He became a filmmaker. -
Moved to Cagnes-sur-Mer
Renoir bought some land in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, to the warmer climate of "Les Collettes" and built a stately home for his family. He painted whenever he could, although Rheumatism had disfigured his hands. -
Renoir had a stroke
Pierre had a stroke which left him in a wheelchair. -
Sculpted based on his paintings
He sculpted some sculptures based on his paintings with some help from assistants. -
The Louvre bought Renoir's paintings
Renoir lived long enough to see his paintings bought by the Louvrein 1919, which is a great honour for any artist. -
